We see a demon in true form, get mention about past Reapers, and discover how Sam’s different from the Devil’s other minions. The pending romance between our Reaper and Andi finally progresses, but what’ll Sam do when she’s unwittingly involved in his dangerous business?
Sam leaves a concerned voice message for Cady on his way to work. She hasn’t called him since she left for her mom’s in New Mexico. When Sam meets Sock and Ben, they’re discussing what to do about their awesome but demonic neighbors Steve and Tony. The boys decide to avoid the couple since they can’t move out so soon. Andi pulls Sam aside to apologize about what she said about Cady and admits it came out of realizing she likes him. Sam doesn’t know what to think. He’s liked her for a long time, but he’s with Cady.
Sock and Ben sneak to their condo, and Sam’s home from driving around thinking out his girl problems. Steve and Tony stop by and ask the boys why they’re avoiding them. They make excuses that upset the couple and make them leave before they do something they’ll regret. The remark scares the boys. (Sam, Sock, and Ben muffins, anyone?) Distracted at work, Sam tells his friends about Andi’s confession. They think he should go for it, but Sam’s unsure and Andi doesn’t want to talk about it. Sam receives the vessel, blowing bubbles and the Devil warps them amidst a photo shoot. There’s one less model thanks to Nicole “Nikki” Manders, a former model turned escaped soul who kills women more beautiful than her with acid.
Sam and co. suck at avoiding Steve and Tony on their way to work, where they research their soul. They visit her former employers Seattle Style magazine’s office and learn from a desk job worker named Kendall Nikki was fired after attacking a rival model Angela, who writes her column at the office late and frequents the Crush Lounge. Sock and Ben jump the club bouncer so Sam can get into the VIP lounge to Nikki and Angela. Nikki spots Sam and bolts.
Steve and Tony surprise Sam at the Bench. He spills that them being demons freaks him, Sock, and Ben out. This offends the couple since they’ve done a lot to protect humans and thinks Sam being a Reaper’s just as abnormal. Sam is shocked they know his secret. They leave after he makes a stupid comment about them eating people. Sam and Andi make plans to hang out at the condo on Friday, and the Devil shows up to keep Sam on task. Sam notices some mannequins in the clothing department and brings one dressed as Angela to the magazine office to bait Nikki. She shows, but Sam can’t blow the vessel bubbles and she escapes, only to follow him home. Just when she’s about to fry him, a bat-like creature scares her off: Steve.
Sam goes to the bar Steve and Tony took Ben on his birthday to apologize to Steve for assuming the worst about them, but the Devil advises him to forget about the demon couple and keep looking for Nikki. Steve shows, hears Sam out, but denies his apology until Sam says that the Devil was right calling demons stubborn. The remark intrigues Steve, since the Devil doesn’t talk to just anybody. After Steve forgives Sam, he mentions Tony is publicizing for a Seattle Style party tomorrow night. Steve will talk to him about getting Sam and co. in.
Tony gives the boys party tickets at the Bench. Andi thinks Sam’s blowing off hanging out with her, but Tony saves his tail with an extra ticket. At the party, the boys can’t locate Nikki, regroup, and split to look for her and Angela. Andi shows up and heads to the bar with Sam for drinks, catching Nikki’s eye. The jealous soul has a new target. Meanwhile, Ben clams up around the beautiful women and asks Sock how he’s able to talk to them. Sock chats it up with Angela nearby but loses her when he sings about her “being his baby momma.”
Sam and Andi slip into a sudden romantic mood and kiss – finally, and the Reaper watching crowd goes wild – but a call from Cady spoils the moment. Andi runs off when Sam picks up, and Nikki follows her down the street. The boys drive into Nikki and shove Andi in the car. Nikki flings acid at the windshield and Sam loses control, sending them over a pile of junk and flipping the car. Sam flops out, blows the vessel bubbles, and captures the soul.
Andi’s in the hospital with a head injury. Sam says they got into a car accident and the concussion made her imagine things, but Andi’s not convinced. He can’t tell her anything else and put her life in danger again.
Back at the apartment complex, Steve brings Sam into his condo’s secret room where no one, including the Devil, can hear them. He says Sam’s the rare Reaper the Devil opened up to and that everyone has their reasons for fighting him.
We’re starting to get into the show’s mythology here. It’s easy assuming there were Reapers before Sam, but I’m excited to see why the Devil’s so interested in this particular one. It surprised me Steve and Tony are against the prince of darkness. I assumed based on Gladys the DMV demon that all demons helped him out. Maybe the demon couple will team up with our bounty hunting boys against him in the future. As for Sam and Andi’s relationship, I’m glad to see it moving, even though I’m not a fan of Reaper’s Ross and Rachel couple and I hate seeing Cady made the bad guy to bring them together. Sam blamed himself for taking her call and leaving Andi vulnerable, but if Cady never called he wouldn’t have had to decide whether to answer. Nikki long before the call noticed Andi, so Sam getting no call wouldn’t stop her anyway. Still, it bothers me the writers are using Cady as a device to further Sam and Andi’s relationship and make Andi start to realize Sam’s secret. I think I like Cady too much compared to Andi, who I’ve only recently warmed up to.
Reaper is getting juicy. If you’re not watching this show you should start now by catching it next Tuesday at 9 PM, its original timeslot.
The next new episode of Reaper won't air until April 22. We'll be getting reruns in the Tuesday 9 pm timeslot until then. I didn't realize this until the review went up, so I'm clarifying it now.
ReplyDeleteStill, reruns are a great way for viewers just getting into or interested in the series. The Devil will be more than happy to claim himself more souls.
