The saddest thing about tonight’s elimination was how Anoop Desai didn’t look as much like ‘Noop Dog as he did Hang Dog. He seemed to walk in knowing he was going down. And even when he hit the Bottom Three, how cruel was it for Ryan, in sending one of the three back to the couch of safety, to say Anoop’s name, then say it wasn’t him? From the Wild Card Round on, they have jerked poor Anoop around. Yes, Hang Dog sounds right.

The good news is —Anoop is actually safe. Sigh.

The evening started off with a video clip of Frankie Avalon singing “Venus” on an old black and white TV show, but then he appeared onstage to finish the song. Cool. Ryan said the song was for Simon, who was born in 1959, the year that song hit the charts. (Man, he’s only 49? He looks at least five years older!)

Then we got a group number of the 2002 hit (the year Idol was born, natch) “Can’t Get You Out of My Head.” Even though it was reportedly a live performance (not prerecorded as past group number have been), it wasn’t anymore exciting. Instead I watched the way the other singers guided the visually impaired Scott MacIntyre around the stage. Now that was entertaining!

For once, the Ford commercial was equally as boring. Maybe they knew it too, so a fairly interesting behind-the-scenes video clip preceded the commercial. Then we had a little couch time with the contestants, which was as fun as it was last week. They’re an entertaining and fun bunch.

Flo Rida’s “Right Round” kicked butt. And he brought out all the stops. Pretty girls? Check. Stripping? Check (he took off his shirt). Confetti? Check (what a mess for the clean up crew). Later on, Kellie Pickler’s voice was as winning as her fumbling her exit.

So we got down to the Bottom Three: Anoop, Lil Rounds and Scott MacIntyre. Lil is given the first reprieve (after Ryan says Anoop’s name first — I’m not letting that slight go). I agree totally that Lil should have landed on the stools of doom. But before her reprieve, Simon says they may use the Judge’s Veto for one or two contestants and we know they mean her, even though she hasn’t turned in an original or powerhouse performance in a month.

So it ends up that Scott is the lowest vote getter and the judges say they are divided on using the veto (it must be unanimous). For once, they seem to understand that even though he’s inspirational, Scott’s just not a great singer. While his smile and good humor have been refreshing, it was time for him to go. And, as Paula says, he definitely was an inspiring contestant. We’ll remember him fondly for that, if not for his voice.

Did you agree that Scott’s time had come? Or do you think the judges should have saved him? Who do you think will go next? And, really, isn’t this basically a one-man competition now, especially after Simon’s standing ovation? Discuss and get back to me…
