Call it a tax day miracle, but Matt Giraud became the first and only contestant blessed by the “Judges’ Save” this season. The judges only had two more weeks to use it anyway.
This episode had all the extra filler we come to expect on a results show ¬— such as performances by past Idol contestant Jennifer Hudson (delivered with very little passion) and Miley Cyrus. The movie preview style opening gave us a nice chuckle or two. The CGI of the Ford commercial impressed more than the singing of “Freeze Frame.” The group number of “Flashdance,” except for singers popping up in unexpected places (i.e. next to Simon), wasn’t anything Jennifer Beals would get excited about.

This episode had all the extra filler we come to expect on a results show ¬— such as performances by past Idol contestant Jennifer Hudson (delivered with very little passion) and Miley Cyrus. The movie preview style opening gave us a nice chuckle or two. The CGI of the Ford commercial impressed more than the singing of “Freeze Frame.” The group number of “Flashdance,” except for singers popping up in unexpected places (i.e. next to Simon), wasn’t anything Jennifer Beals would get excited about.
We also saw the contestants attending the opening of red carpet opening of “17 Again,” complete with hugging stars Zac Efron and Leslie Mann. Zac actually showed up in the audience, but only to tell us when the film opened. Product placement? You bet.
Thank goodness Ryan didn’t pull the same stunt he’s used for the past Top 7 results show — putting the contestants in two groupings of three and let the forerunner (which would be Adam in this case) pick which one he thinks will be staying.
Anoop Desai was the first to the Stools of Dread, followed by Lil Rounds and then Matt Giraud. Ryan played his head games again, making Adam Gokey think he would be in the B3, but of course the crowd favorite didn’t have to worry.
And for once, Ryan didn’t play with Anoop’s head and let him come back to the Couch of Safety first (which means Anoop got the third lowest votes, even after I voted for an hour! I know his days are numbered, but I’m hoping for a solid fifth for him).
Before the final elimination, the judges were asked if they would use the save on either contestant and Simon said “perhaps” for one of them. Ryan asks if it’s Lil, but the judges wouldn’t say. Matt, who said he’d wish he’d sung his song straight before, got the chance to do just that and went flat less often. He also didn’t get to play the piano this time.
I think everyone knew Matt would get the save when Kara and Paula began dancing to his song and mouthing that they loved him. Simon tried to make it sounds as if he didn’t agree (saying that Matt had no chance of winning), but then blessed a tearful Matt with the save.
Interesting that the judges who didn’t get to critique last night because of the format change to only a pair commenting, make their opinions known. For instance, Simon said that Kris was “brilliant.” And even with so little real news to impart, the show went over by a minute.
