The after effects of the fight in “Sex and Violence” are still oh so present this week. Sam gets word of a job in Wyoming where people who should be dead are still walking, including a guy who got shot in the chest. Dean asks Sam if he wants him to go too or if he’ll just hold him back. Yikes.

The after effects of the fight in “Sex and Violence” are still oh so present this week. Sam gets word of a job in Wyoming where people who should be dead are still walking, including a guy who got shot in the chest. Dean asks Sam if he wants him to go too or if he’ll just hold him back. Yikes.

In Wyoming, Alastair interrupts Sam and Dean’s séance in a cemetery and tosses Dean like he’s nothing. A far stronger Sam exorcises Alastair easily and then lies to Dean about it, since he conveniently missed the whole thing by being knocked out. Dean tells Sam not to treat him like an idiot, so at least he can still tell when Sam is full of it.

The boys find out that if you kill a reaper on the solstice moon, it breaks a seal and guess what? The solstice moon is one day away. They have to find the reaper and warn him or her but as we’ve seen a few times involving Dean in the past, only people close to death can see them. Dean comes up with the wildly dangerous idea to ask Pamela, you know, the super cool friend of Bobby’s who got blinded by Castiel, to astrally project them, making it seem like they’re dead. Oh, surely this plan can’t have any flaws.

I loved the moment when Dean puts his arm through Sam and asks, “Am I making you uncomfortable?” Sam says, “Get out of me,” and Dean replies, “You’re such a prude.” Parlor tricks aside, the boys find Cole (played by Weeds’ Alexander Gould!), a boy who was supposed to have died from an asthma attack but still is hanging out in his house, royally spooking out his mom. He tells them how he saw the reaper but black smoke came in from everywhere and took the reaper with it.

Tessa shows up. You know, Tessa, from In My Time of Dying, the girl reaper that tried to take Dean? Yeah, that Tessa. She comes for Cole and Sam and Dean convince her to hold off. She agrees on the condition that they know she’s taking Cole first when she starts reaping again. Sam talks to Cole and like a total jerk, promises him that he doesn’t have to go with Tessa if he helps them. Officially, Sam isn’t Sam anymore and these heartfelt talks he notoriously has with people have seriously gone sour.

Dean admits he wishes he’d gone with Tessa and that the pain of John and Sam has been too much. This man needs a vacation and preferably not one spent in Hell. The smoke takes Tessa and Cole sets about teaching Sam and Dean how to move stuff and interact with the living world. He tells them they have to get angry and punches Sam and Dean. He can also disappear and reappear, which is a handy little trick.

The boys go to save the two reapers but Alastair is yet again one step ahead and uses iron and rock salt on Dean. It must be a shock to be on that side of things. Here’s the big bad: they’ve left Pamela watching their bodies, you know, the pretty ones we like and they want to return to? The symbol holding the reapers gets broken and Tessa is freed. Sam returns to his body just in time for Pamela to get stabbed. Not Pamela! I love Pamela! Sam rips out in the demon in his special demony way and Pamela, badass that she is, refuses all medical treatment and just wants to drink.

Castiel takes Alastair and yay, it’s almost like a win. Almost. Tessa asks for Dean’s help with Cole, who is scared. Dean tells Cole, “We’re all scared. That’s the big secret.” Tessa tells Dean to stop lying to himself and trust his instinct that something bad is heading his way. Meanwhile, Pamela is dying and Sam says she doesn’t deserve it. She agrees and so do I. This is ridiculous. First she gets blinded for them and now she gets killed. That’s just awful. Badass until the end, she tells Sam, “If you think you have good intentions, think again. I know what’s inside of you.”

The episode ends with a dedication to Kim Manners, executive producer and director of Supernatural and The X-Files and all around awesome guy. It dedicates the entire season to Kim and says, “We miss you, Kim.” My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and I’d just like to post a big thank you. Your work meant a lot to me and to so many people and you will be greatly missed.
