When Ryan announced that this week’s elimination would be shocking (code for “a favorite is going home”), I assumed it would be Lil Rounds. Face it — she didn’t do a very good job on Country Week and her ouster would fit the definition of shocking (although we know the judges would save her).

  1. I can't say that I'm sad. Although I was hoping the judges would use their save on her so they owuldn't be able to use it on Daniel later.

When Ryan announced that this week’s elimination would be shocking (code for “a favorite is going home”), I assumed it would be Lil Rounds. Face it — she didn’t do a very good job on Country Week and her ouster would fit the definition of shocking (although we know the judges would save her).

So I wasn’t prepared when it turned out to be… Alexis Grace. While her rendition of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” hadn’t been her best performance, she sang on key and showed off her pretty voice. So what the heck happened? We may never know.

Otherwise the show opened with the group song “Trouble,” which was kinda bland but not outright bad. My new guilty pleasure is watching how they’re going to choreograph the dancing around blind contestant Scott MacIntyre. This time, they had him at the piano — smart choice.

The Ford commercial proved much more fun than the group number. I’m so glad the commercial has become part of the actual broadcast, because in the past my husband and I had to rewind our DVR after we saw it grouped in with the other non-Idol commercials.

Ryan took some time to ask the contestants questions — much better than last year when voters had to call in and ask (although Simon’s first kiss calling was a truly memorable moment). Megan Joy talked about having influenza B (never heard of it) and how she’s getting better now. Alexis and Michael Sarver got to talk about missing their kids and Michael had a moment that tugged hearts and probably gained him a lot of votes. He said his daughter asked him (cue tears in his eyes) “why he didn’t want to be with her anymore?” *Sniff* Give me a moment…

We also saw a party given to eliminated singers Jasmine Murray and Jorge Nunez last week. I got the chance today to ask Alexis if she also got a party and she said no. I wonder why? (For more of that interview, see separate posting).

Two solid performances filled up the rest of the show. Grand Ole Opry member Brad Paisley sang “Then.” Then fellow Opry members Carrie (what is that black thing on your head?) Underwood and Randy Travis dueted on “I Told You So.”

Side Note to Randy Travis: Most singers become mentors on Idol to reach its younger audience. If you mention you’ve never seen a man with nail polish, i.e. Adam Lambert, it makes you look like an Old Foggie.

So the elimination went like this: Danny Gokey, Lil and Anoop Desai (Anoop!) are quickly told they are safe. Allison Iraheta and Michael Sarver stand up and Ryan sends Allison to the bottom three (damn, all that speed dialing didn’t work). As Michael sits down, Ryan tells him he’s also in the bottom three. Scott, Matt, Megan (cough) Joy are safe, so it’s down to Adam Lambert and Alexis to fill the last seat and… it’s Alexis.

Allison is quickly sent back to safety (whew!). Looking at Michael and Alexis, it seems obvious that Michael is going home. The judges agree and say they might use their save on one of the contestants, which obviously is Alexis. But after Alexis sings “Jolene” once more in a shakey voice, the judges decide to let her go home (a good clue it would go that way was Randy calling her Allison!).

So now we have our Top 10 that will, at the very least, get to go on the American Idol Summer Tour. Next week we get the sounds of Motown. So I wonder how Adam will heavy metal that up? How do you feel about Alexis going home? Who else would you like to see follow her?
