Bear Grylls makes one of his longest drops, this one of 15,000 feet out of a helicopter into the mountains of Turkey. Well I hope you didn’t expect him to end up having a Shish in Istanbul.
Somehow, Bear is able to land in a small lake to soften the speed of his drop from above. He gets tied up in the line of the chute, but fortunately pulls out and goes ashore. Soon he descends the mountain to the tree line before it gets too cold in the high grounds. He finds a goat carcass too rotted to eat. But he skins it to get it’s coat and also takes some of it’s fat. He makes his way to a river, which are his favorite ways to escape any desolate situation. He builds a raft with sticks and his parachute to travel quickly down river. He uses the goatskin as a paddle by tying it to some sticks. He hears stronger water rushing coming ahead so he pulls over. It’s a good thing, since it turns out to be a 120’ waterfall!
Bear sends the raft over the waterfall ahead of him. Then, he takes all of his parachute cord with some sticks to build a makeshift ladder to climb down. He runs out of ladder, so the only thing left to do is jump down. He makes an amazing jump below and then pulls the raft out to continue his ride. It’s somewhat water logged, but he still uses it to make his way down the raging river. As the water gets shallow, he gets out of the water to continue on foot. He’s hungry and finds a (oh no) SLUG! He tells us that slugs can only be eaten if they’re cooked. And here I thought that you can never find a good way to eat a slug. He eats his slug soup and moves on.
He locates some old caves that were once inhabited by Christians that were persecuted and needed to hide in ancient times. He will set up a base camp here. He goes out for food and catches some crabs and a frog. Unfortunately though the frog escapes and Bear calls it the frog’s lucky day. He eats his crabs and tells us that he will be exploring the caves to see if he can find a way out of the valley. He goes in and out of different caves looking for a way up and out. He finds an opening on the other side on a ledge, and decides that he wants to climb up the rest of the way on the outside. He shimmies up in a wedge in the cliffside to the top.
Bear tells us that he has food poisoning and it’s given him diarrhea. He shows us a plant that he can use to wipe his backside that will be softer than what he was using. He also knows that he needs water to replace what he’s lost with his bathroom (or lack thereof) issues. He eats a scorpion and keeps looking for water. As it gets dark he decides to travel at night. After traveling a long time through the night, he decides to make camp and sets some traps for food in the dark. Even though we see Bear with the infrared camera, he can’t see anything. He crawls under a large rock and buries himself underneath with smaller stones for protection.
The next morning Bear feels much better after some rest. He finds that one of his traps have caught him a lizard. He cooks it for breakfast and goes to look for water again. He climbs a mini cliff to get a high view of things and sees a good way to move forward, through a saltpan. A saltpan is a place where an ocean once was but is long gone. He digs a small hole and puts his coat in the hole to make a place to catch water from the new rain that’s falling. After traveling far enough along the edge of the saltpan, he starts to see signs of life and his way out of there.
I thought this was an interesting episode in the way that a couple others had been. He had several different climates/issues to deal within one locale. He was in the mountains, then caves and before you knew it the desert. I thought the saltpan was very intriguing and nothing like anything he’s done yet. And I thought the jump at the beginning (while he was holding the camera) was more dramatic than most. Overall I thought this was another solid entry for Bear. What are your thoughts on the subject? And, what would it take before you would eat a slug? That may be last on my list.
