Take a number. It’s a little crowded at McNamara/Troy this week. We’ve got three surgeries, a self-mutilation, an unexpected death and a rap video. There’s also sexual confusion and rampant mistrust, but I’m sure you’re all used to that.

Take a number. It’s a little crowded at McNamara/Troy this week. We’ve got three surgeries, a self-mutilation, an unexpected death and a rap video. There’s also sexual confusion and rampant mistrust, but I’m sure you’re all used to that.

It’s easy to make comparisons with Kevin Smith’s “Chasing Amy”, with Sean and Christian both pursuing lesbians, but there’s more to the Christian/Liz storyline, and it won’t be resolved in under two hours. As Christian touts the “mystical powers” of his anatomy, Liz decides to see if the same thing happens with another man. When her date arrives, he is almost a clone of Christian. In one of the show’s most beautiful scenes, she and Christian pour their hearts out to each other as she admits to disappointment. During the conversation, they both try to avoid the word “love”, but in admitting a deep, meaningful trust for each other, it’s hard for them to find another word. As the well-played scene ends, they head, hand in hand, to the bedroom.

Sean’s woes grow as Olivia asks for a facelift, which goes against the holistic bent that she professed last season. His reluctance grows when Olivia announces that she and Julia will be returning to New York for good. During surgery, Sean has a fantasy moment, and as he wishes her dead, Olivia goes into cardiac arrest. As Sean comforts Julia, she relays her distrust of him, pulling incidents from the last few seasons. She is about to return to New York with Olivia’s ashes when Eden returns. Conveniently, she is the only person who knew Olivia was on anti-depressants, which caused a reaction to the anesthesia. She leaves, but not before throwing Olivia’s ashes in their faces.

At a cancer support group, Christian steers the topic toward recruiting new clients. He angers most of the group, but Roxy St. James approaches him after the meeting. While she has not contracted cancer, her family history puts her at risk. After hearing Christian talk, she asks him to cut hr risk by replacing the living tissue with implants. Liz talks Christian out of this, so Roxy shows up the next day to perform the operation herself, in the lobby, with an electric knife. When she goes into shock, Christian is forced to complete the procedure. The most horrifying thing about this is how clearly Roxy thinks this out. It’s a bizarre line of thinking, but even as she plugs in the knife, Roxy is dead certain that this is the right thing to do. We’ve seen our share of psychos on this show, but very few as poised as she is.

In the show’s most disposable storyline, actress Candy Richards (Jennifer Coolidge, American Pie) has connected with her black roots (not the hair). She is repackaging herself as a ghetto gangsta rapper, Coco. She comes to the office needing more junk in the trunk, a procedure she refers to as “reparations”. As she goes under the knife, she requests that her demo be played during surgery. The doctors agree, and we hear the song “Yo Stink B*tch”, along with the video.

On the plus side, it is one of the funniest musical descriptions of noxious emanations since Friends broke out “Smelly Cat”. Still, the plotline seems unnecessary with everything else going on this week. And the lyrics are amusing, but nothing the Bloodhound Gang hasn’t already explored. The best part of the scene is the usually mute Nurse Linda continuing to sing the song as she cleans up.

Judge for yourself. Watch the video for “Yo Stink B*tch” at the following link
