After a month-long break, Old Christine is back with a new year for us and a new school year for Ritchie, who’s starting 7th grade. This leads to conflict between Christine and another parent, one who ruined her reputation when they were both in junior high. Apparently, despite popular belief, Christine can’t take all the blame for her image.
Christine, Richard, and Matthew are at an orientation for Ritchie’s experience in transitional-period hell. The Meanie Moms are there, too, pregnant as ever, but Christine’s focused on sucking up to score points for Ritchie- until she sees someone she recognizes. It’s a classmate who for got a reputation for being easy. Christine runs off to give him a piece of her mind. Only Todd has no idea who she is.
For no apparent reason other than to get them in the episode, Barb and New Christine run into each other at the movie theater. People keep cutting in front of them. New Christine won’t stand up for herself, but Barb takes care of that with her usual subtle style. Back at the orientation, while Richard snickers at all manner of sexually-related terms, it becomes clear Todd might not as be as clueless to who Christine is as we thought. He, Christine, and Matthew all squabble, before the principal banishes them to have a conversation in private. Christine confronts Todd, but quickly loses steam when he mentions how successful he’s become compared to her status as a single mother.
The next day, Christine and Matthew go back to Ritchie’s school, only to find that Todd told everyone he and Christine slept together. Desperate for revenge, Christine makes Matthew stand guard outside the men’s bathroom as she goes in. Unfortunately, there’s a very awkward scene between Matthew and the principal, who then walks into find Christine writing insulting statements about Todd’s…well, let’s just say the middle school mentality fits. The principal grills Christine and orders her to go clean the bathroom stall. Outside, she runs into Todd again. He admits he let the rumor he helped spread continue because it made him popular. Christine is flattered- enough to come back later telling Matthew that their differences have been settled because she let him touch her breasts. That reputation might not have been totally undeserved. Meanwhile, New Christine, inspired by Barb, stands up for herself at work First it got her fired, then it got her a raise. Don’t ask me.
Any predictions for Ritchie’s new school or New Christine’s new job? Not a lot happened this week- which probably means something big is coming soon. Talk about the episode in comments!
What Old Christine Taught Me This Week:
1. Real time does not matter to this show
2. Yelling at people always works
3. It’s possible to have an episode inspired by Ritchie without him actually being in it.
4. The word “butt” makes anything a joke
5. Immaturity never really goes away
