I’m not sure what to make of new judge Kara DioGuardi after the Louisville auditions.
At first, I admired Kara for her honesty. When contestant Joanna Pacitti came in, Kara pointed out that Joanna has already had a record deal (two in fact, although that wasn’t mentioned). Joanna admitted that “it hadn’t worked out” with a tear and then gave an excellent audition. But her voice is a little weak for my taste, which had me wondering if that’s why the singer has been dropped by two labels.

Yet, just as Kara seemed to be a breath of fresh air, she made the nastiest remark to another contestant— even nastier than most of what Simon says! When Rebecca Garcia struggled to stay in tune, Kara laughed and told the singer that, because Rebecca had been voted the “most humorous” in high school, Kara thought her audition was a joke. Whoa — I almost cried along with Rebecca. It was like watching a tiger take down a kitten.
Other than that, this episode was only slightly more entertaining than Tuesday’s audition show in San Francisco, albeit with a few more good singers. Once again we had long clips from contestants that were built up as “special,” only to realize that they couldn’t hold a tune.
It makes you wonder about this stage of a singing competition when the singing takes a backseat to the crazies. I did enjoy a 30-second clip of singers who were given golden tickets. But why not make that segment three to five minutes so we really hear them sing (I don’t need to hear what the judges said, just that they’re going to Hollywood)? The time could easily be taken from a contestant who gets five minutes of back story, only to crash and burn in the audition.
In addition to Joanna, other contestants that stood out included country singer Brent Keith Smith (only Simon didn’t seem to get that his husky voice and pretty face made him a real contender), dueling pianist Matt Giraud and the jazzy Alexis Grace. A lot of time was spent telling the story of Leneshe Young, how she was homeless as a child and how her mother kept their family together despite such poverty. I expected another disappointment and got the exact opposite. Leneche (a great pop star name, BTW) sang amazing — I predict that she’ll make the top 12 with ease.
Once again, I felt relieved that the episode was just an hour long, despite the fact that the judges spent two days in Louisville. There are only three more audition shows to go and each lasts an hour. Then it’s on to Hollywood.
Are you as eager as I am to get to Hollywood so we can hear the really good singers? Do you have any favorites yet? Or are you already overdosed on the auditions? Don’t worry, we have a week to recoup and build up our hopes once again.
