Barely a minute into the newest season of our favorite real time show, the action comes crashing in. Literally in this case. A simple morning drive to work for a man and his daughter gets shaken up as a black van smashes into him from the side. But this was no accident. The van hits him again and some masked men kidnap him leaving the daughter in the car. Hoo boy. Welcome back, Jack Bauer!

Jack is sitting in his third day of trial for the crimes that he supposedly committed against America. Jack sees it as saving lives and feels that he did anything he could to save the lives of American people. Before the trial commences, someone from the FBI comes walking in with a subpoena to take Jack. (Apparently everyone wants a piece of our boy). We find out that the man kidnapped is Michael Latham and his claim to fame is that he designed the firewall that the US uses to protect its telecommunication systems that control everything from air traffic to food distribution.

In a quick briefing back at FBI headquarters Jack finds out about the new crisis. He’s not interested in helping, until he (and us) get a big surprise: One of the people behind the kidnapping is none other than Tony Almeida! Last we saw Tony he was seemingly killed by Henderson at CTU! And this is confirmed as we see him without the mask. The agent that picked up Jack, Renee Walker, had Tony’s coffin exhumed and it wasn’t Tony in the coffin. Back in that episode, Tony looked to have died and was taken off by EMT’s. Now it appears that he wasn’t truly dead.

We meet up again with President Allison Taylor, who is gathering the Joint Chiefs of Staff to come up with a plan to stop the insurgence in Africa. We find out that she and her husband Henry have recently lost a son, and he is taking it harder than she. Meanwhile, Jack agrees to assist the FBI with catching Tony, although he doesn’t believe that Tony is capable of doing what they suggest. Of course, Tony’s wife was killed by a rogue part of ex-President Logan’s regime and Logan got a slap on the wrist. Perhaps this is revenge against the US? Later we see that Latham has gotten the device to work. There may be a test coming soon. And as President Taylor is preparing to give the order to go to war, she is interrupted with the news of the newest crisis. She’d consider grounding all of air traffic, but is told that it would take 12 hours. This is not enough time to avoid a possible catastrophe.

Henry gets a phone call from a private investigator and asks if he found out anything about Roger. Henry is positive that Roger didn’t kill himself, and he probably didn’t. We’d learned in the movie Redemption that Roger’s friend Chris (who was also murdered) shared the information that he found out about Jonas Hodges and his weapons dealings. The investigator tells Henry that his girlfriend received some money in an off shore account soon after his death. Later, Renee requests to bring Jack out to help them.

Renee and Jack follow a lead to find a man who Tony and he had captured once before. Jack thinks that he may be involved in the new firewall crisis. They meet the man, Schecter, who denies any involvement. Renee allows Jack to “question” him in the way that he knows best. Schecter agrees to talk, but before he can he is shot to death right in front of them by a sniper. The phone rings and Jack answers.. it’s Tony and he tells Jack to stay out of it. Before Jack can talk to him, he hangs up. The first episode ends with an air traffic control center losing the ability to talk to a commercial jet.

As usual, 24 delivers in the action department. And I have to tell you, the reappearance of Tony may win the Double Take Moment of the Year award. I’m happy to see him again, although it’s hard to believe he’s a terrorist now. I’m looking forward to watching Jack showing the FBI how to get things done. What do you think? Do you think Tony is really one of the bad guys now? Are you happy to see him back? I thank you for your two cents.
