TwoCents Editorial - Shield Snubbed

Shield Snubbed

I'm going through the roof like the Wonkavator.

It took me a while to look at the Golden Globe nominations. I was worried what I might see... Or more accurately, what I might not see. Now that I finally peeked, I'm censoring myself heavily as I write this.

It took me a while to look at the Golden Globe nominations. I was worried what I might see...Or more accurately, what I might not see. Now that I finally peeked, I'm censoring myself heavily as I write this.

I have no respect at all for the Golden Globes. I can't believe that this is the same group who had the sense to give Linda Fiorentino a best actress award for The Last Seduction. Guess that was a fluke.

It was slightly encouraging last year to see them nominate Damages, but the deck was stacked heavily against Ted Danson. That category has not been reevaluated...The title is identical.

No nominations at all for The Shield? Were they even watching? Chiklis either dusted or held his own with all the best actor nominees, sometimes without speaking a word. The same goes for CCH Pounder as supporting actress. Maybe if they did half a season like The Sopranos, they would have had a better shot.

True Blood was unique, involving, but inconsistent. And don't the nominations for House and Hugh Laurie seem like courtesy nods to network shows? Mad Men and In Treatment still seem like "gimmick" shows to me. I will give the benefit of the doubt to Dexter, but I haven't been able to see it.

But OK, when all is said and done, they did the show for the fans, not the awards people. If the publicists for these other shows did a better job selling them to the Hollywood Foreign Press, fine. Fans of this show (like me) will have to draw parallels with the tons of musical pioneers who never got a Grammy. (Or customize with your award of choice)

The honor isn't essential, but it would have been nice.

  2. Tom,

I will speak up in defense of In Treatment - that show was amazing when I got to see it.

But I feel your pain. I complained for years about the lack of award recognition for The Wire, which I still am bitter over. There are others I can go on about: Xander Berkeley not getting a nod for his swan song season of "24," Neal McDonough getting no love for his work on "Boomtown" as David McNorris. I'm still ticked at those.

Awards shows are nice, but I put almost no stock in them. The Emmys keep giving them to Shatner and Spader every year, for example. I just don't care anymore because I know mostly the good ones get overlooked.
