  1. After the utter tension of the past two episodes, we get one that is easier on the nerves, but no less intriguing. This is the nature of laying groundwork for a stable foundation. God, now I’m talking like a structural engineer!

Michael’s brain surgery triggers components of his memory, where he meets the image of Westmoreland. Since he died during the Fox River breakout in season one, Michael has felt the most guilt at involving him in the plan. Envisioning himself in his cell at Fox River, Michael is urged on by Westmoreland as he reviews the clues to the true nature of Scylla. He puts together the words “power” and “bargain”, and as he wakes to Sara holding him, he understands that Scylla holds a way to harness solar energy. So whoever buys Scylla is not interested in taking down the Company, they’re interested in building a new Company.

The images inside Michael’s mind are an interesting metaphor…Not quite abstract, not quite literal. It doesn’t feel like a dream sequence or an overly artistic metaphor. In other words, it’s handled very well. Not to mention, it’s a nice nod to the past for the fans that have followed since the first season. Nice to see these characters recur, and this is about the only way that can happen. The PB boards and blogs still fantasize and speculate about characters that were killed or disappeared. And Westmoreland was always one of the guys you wanted to make it over the wall.

The General sends Linc after Self and Gretchen. After starting to torture Bagwell, he gets the location of their meeting and he and Sucre head out. Gretchen gets a call from her sister and realizes that Bagwell will give up the location, so she and Self disappear. Linc and Sucre finally track them to the old HQ, but the buyer’s middleman double crosses them and takes Scylla. This leads the General to put Linc, Self, Gretchen and (possibly) Bagwell together as a new Company team to hunt down Scylla. Linc breaks the news to Michael, also letting him know that after reading the Tombstone II file, he has found out that their mother was also working for the Company. A rift may be forming between the two brothers, and you have to admit, Michael doesn’t come off as being all that grateful.

As Mahone makes his escape from the FBI, the middleman confirms that he has Scylla, and we hear a female voice on the other end of the phone. Is it Lisa? Caroline Reynolds? The ghost of Veronica Donavan? Stay tuned…There will be a lot built on this foundation.
