Prison Break delivers the best episode of the season, as Bellick is mourned, Sucre is in peril, Bagwell’s odd suspicions pay off, and the mystery around Scylla deepens. A few weeks back, I was speculating about who would be the dominant character this season. Turns out that Scylla becomes the focus rather than any of the new characters. It reminds me of Time magazine naming the personal computer as Man of the Year. The writers make a skillful shift from a break in caper to a six piece puzzle to a move through a booby-trapped labyrinth.
ReplyDeleteAmazing as well is the balance between the caper and the crew’s humanity. While Bellick and Sucre negotiate the tunnel, Michael deals with a brain tumor, and we see flashbacks of Bellick’s good side. Let’s face it, this guy wasn’t a choirboy, but he did get Sara the job at Fox River, and he saved the lives of a few members of the crew. Redemption always makes for a great storyline (although I wouldn’t expect it for Bagwell’s exit, whenever that happens). Mahone’s personal closure also provides a nice touch.
The episode opens with Bellick being kept in ice until the Scylla project is ended. This contradicts Self’s original deal, so he relents and agrees to a burial. The crew is about to go back to work when Michael collapses. Sara takes him to the hospital. The doctor wants to admit him, but when the cops arrive, they give the number to the doctor and flee. The call finally comes recommending immediate surgery.
Michael meets with a surprised Gretchen to retrieve the remaining pages. Deciphering certain symbols, he finds the name David Baker. At the same time, the General calls on the same man to help him move Scylla. Mahone is able to track him down, but Baker is unwilling to help. Baker is picked up by the Company, but Mahone escapes. He is met by Baker’s wife, who gives him the legend to the Scylla blueprints.
TrishAnne gives Gretchen’s info to Bagwell, but it’s the clean version, without Company involvement. Bagwell is given one of Andy’s speaking gigs, with the president watching. When TrishAnne drops the name Whistler, Bagwell becomes suspicious. He asks for her file and finds her references. He calls the first number and reaches the cell phone of Don Self.
Sucre and Linc return to the tunnel, where they come up against another wall. Sucre steps on a land mine that has been planted. If he steps off, it will detonate. Thinking it’s a setup, Linc goes back for Gretchen. She examines the situation, and says she can disarm the bomb if Sucre steps one inch to the left. He is terrified and refuses to move. She almost convinces him when Self rushes in to stop them. The legend has shown that dismantling the bomb will set off an alarm. They find a manual override and save Sucre.
After reviewing the Scylla defense system, Self brings in Bellick’s body for a final viewing. Mahone places his son’s picture on Bellick’s chest before the casket is closed.
There’s my two cents. What do you think? Drop them in the comments or drop me a line at: tom@thetwocents.com .
I have no idea why this death got to me so much. It was just so sudden and out of the blue. Usually you see them coming, but not this one for me. :( And all the flashbacks made it worse!
