Tonight, Ritchie acts in a play, and for the first time in his life, is actually really good at something. So Christine takes him to audition for a commercial despite everyone’s objections. Because she makes decisions for herself. And isn’t all that smart.

Christine, Matthew, Richard, and New Christine are all at Ritchie’s school play, anticipating a horrible time. To help them, the Meanie Moms come in and talk about how the play could mean a future in the theater. But then Ritchie gives an awesome performance that makes them all cry- except Matthew, who went to get ice cream. A talent agent comes to recruit Ritchie for a national commercial. Christine is very eager. Richard is not. Would you let your kid go for it? Oblivious to all this, Ritchie comes and asks what they thought of the play, causing New Christine to run out crying again.

When they come home, Richard and Christine start to argue about the commercial again. Eventually they decide to let Ritchie decide. Christine asks, but Ritchie isn’t interested, which pleases Richard, but annoys Christine, who decides to take Ritchie to the audition the next morning anyway. She’s upset that she and Matthew’s parents never encouraged them to do anything. Matthew doesn’t think this plan will go well. And then they start dancing.

Christine, Matthew, and Ritchie go to the audition. Ritchie is still apprehensive, so Christine tries to get his confidence up. Soon the Meanie Moms show up too, and try to discourage Christine about Ritchie’s chances in the commercial. Meanwhile, Matthew almost hits on a member of Richie’s class. They get home to find Richard waiting up for them, angry. He sends Matthew and Ritchie to their rooms and chews out Christine for going over his head. Christine admits she was wrong, but then tells Richard that Ritchie got the part. The next morning, however, Ritchie comes down dressed for karate. He wants to go to his yellow belt test instead of the commercial. His parents have always told him he’s good at everything, but while he is at acting, he’s not at karate. So they make him go to the audition against his will. Which makes Christine worried, but now Richard is all for the idea. At the commercial, Ritchie isn’t having fun, but Christine has resumed her position of wanting to live vicariously through her son. Richard makes her realize how selfish she’s being. Which she blames him for, of course. But she does take Ritchie home.

So what did you think of Ritchie’s brief acting career (And his dancing karate!)? Who did you side with at first, Richard or Christine? Talk about the episode in comments!

What Old Christine Taught Me This Week:
    1. New Christine’s aunt thinks Sesame Street is Satanic.
    2. Matthew’s jazz dance instructor was probably a pedophile.
    3. People murder because their parents didn’t encourage them
    4. Acting is like tempura. With raisins.
    5. Someday Christine just might get the hang of being a parent.
