Last week's episode tied up some things and left us waiting for a shoe to drop on the others. This week, I was not disappointed (okay, on one count I was disappointed) and there are even more shoes up in the air. Some are going to hit the ground and make a glorious thud when they do.
In a moment of foreshadowing, Nola and Jeremy are in the bathtub and again it is highlighted for us that if anyone found out about them, she could lose her job. Nick and Nola meet in court chambers because she thinks he was witness tampering. Patrick visits Tripp, who has a list for Patrick's chief of staff in Washington. Maybe I'm showing myself to be tainted by years of watching The West Wing, but doesn't a person in that position generally have something to do with the campaign? Also Karen is getting mawwied to her twue wuv Simon Elder and she talks Nick into telling Tripp. Which he then does, and recommends that Tripp cut Karen out of everything she has coming to her.
In light of the scene of Karen with her brothers, I think we need more scenes with Darling siblings. The only way that scene could have been made better was if Juliette had been there. But the gods are not so kind to us. I appreciated that for a moment they weren't whatever position it is the public sees them in and were just siblings. All three brothers teased Karen (Brian wins for, "But he didn't fall in love with daddy's mortal enemy," and the cameramen win for catching Patrick and Jeremy's LOL reactions), and she gave as good as they got.
As for Tripp and Karen -- I laughed at the feeling of doom and gloom that suddenly came over the room when Tripp entered the party like Maleficent coming to the christening of Princess Aurora. He was all sunshine and rainbows with Karen, and then he turned to the boys with an, "As for you three." Seeing the "oh crap" looks on their faces was absolutely worth it. There is no doubt about who wears the pants in that family.
The Brian/Andrea/Brian Jr plot stepped it up this time around, which I was glad for. For a moment I was all wibbly at the prospect of Brian Jr being sick, but then I saw the Brians playing Wii. I probably should have known. The revelation of Andrea having the big C -- cancer, you sickos -- wasn't much of a surprise, I kind of knew what the doctor was going to say before the words left his mouth. It makes me kind of sad, although I'm much more attached to the Brians than I am to her.
The whole Lisa's gallery thing… well. I'm just glad that they didn't stretch it out for episode after episode, like ripping off a band aid. I should have known that Good Charlotte would eventually ruin a good thing, but I didn't think it was going to be Nick/Lisa. (In case you couldn't tell, this was the one part of the episode I didn't like.) I wept with Lisa, I won't lie. That's all I really have to say about that.
Jeremy was screwing up in all sectors of his life this week. He divulged his sexual relationship with Nola to Nick (after Nick kind of threw him into a building and threatened him), and then said relationship was promptly broken off by Nola after the charges against Letitia were dropped for prosecutorial misconduct. That's going to take a lot of private Weepies concerts to make up for, Jeremy. The scene with his mother on the balcony was absolutely stunning work by both Seth Gabel and Jill Clayburgh. I don't know what I can possibly say about that scene. Jeremy needs his twin! Come back, Juliette!
I'm thinking Nola's last name, Lyons, is spelled wrong. It should be L-i-o-n-s, because she is fierce. After pouncing Nick in chambers, she gets pounced back in a later scene which is, may I say, beautifully balanced, thematically speaking. And then the fact that she not only blackmails her way into being Patrick's chief of staff BUT is also working with Simon Elder is quite brilliant. I nearly fell off the couch. They lulled me into a sense of security that I could predict what will happen with the cancer thing, and then they spanked me. I deserved it for getting complacent.
The Reality Check of the week goes to Nick for being a complete douche bag. You do not maybe kind of leave your wife and then go see your engaged ex-girlfriend whose advances you have turned down many, many times. It makes you look sleazy. I just. It's so wrong. I would feel better about Karen if I could actually think of her as a human being. Team Lisa all the way!
So next week it appears like we finally get a moment that I have been waiting basically all of season one and season two so far for. Lisa is going to whack Karen, and rightly so. I'm ready for some fisticuffs between the girls. What do you think? Team Lisa or Team Karen? Did you see the cancer coming? Will Andrea stay in the U.S.? What's the show going to do when Mr. Smith -- uh, I mean, Patrick goes to Washington? My guess is if they show things there are all it'll be mostly interiors.
