Hello, TheTwoCents readers, I’ll be taking over the Grey’s Anatomy Recap & Review duties from our friend, Valeria. I’ve been the resident Family Guy Recap & Reviewer here and I’m happy to take over Grey’s Anatomy duties. Let me start off my saying that a girlfriend of mine got me hooked on Grey’s Anatomy (it was a slow process) but ever since I’ve never looked back.

I’ve seen every episode and watch each new episode religiously each Thursday. I hope that you’ll continue reading the Grey’s Anatomy Recap & Reviews and maybe you’ll enjoy the male perspective of the show (don’t worry, ladies, I’ll try and see things from your side of the fence, too… but please comment and correct me when I am off). I also like to ask questions in my Recap & Reviews so please commend and chime in. On with the show…
This episode breaks down into a few key plotlines (as Grey’s episodes usually do). I’ll tackle them one by one starting with Miranda (Dr. Bailey). The Chief (Richard) approaches Miranda early on and challenges her to start developing herself now to be the future Chief- he welcomes her to start making more decisions on her own and grown more independent as time goes by.
His first challenge involves saving a ten year old girl who has a severely inoperable tumor. As the story plays out, Miranda enlists the help of Erica (Dr. Hahn) who is reluctant to help or assist and in general projects a negative shadow on the projects planning. After the Chief, Miranda, Erica, and Meredith (Dr. Grey) deliberate for a while they decide on a risky procedure that will involve taking out the young girls organs, temporarily freezing them, removing a tumor, then repackaging her organs. I was wondering- I have to admit- during this episode if this kind of procedure is even possible? I mean this is crazy. At any rate, despite some early bickering from Erica towards Miranda, the surgeons finally bring their A-game and manage to save the young girl.
While all that is taking place we get a guest returning for some more airtime.
Remember that awesome Army surgeon who stuck a pen in the guys throat from a few episodes ago? He’s back! Owen Hunt. Evidently, Owen has been brought on as a trauma surgeon and been tasked with helping train some of the other residents and interns in how to manage critical situations. He organizes the troops, brings them into a room, pulls back a curtain, and stabs 4 pigs that are hooked up to anesthetics already and on the operating tables. ABC made it a point between EVERY COMMERICAL to point out that NO ANIMALS WERE HARMED DURING THIS EPISODE. Well, Thank God for that, I was worried (that was sarcasm- it’s TV- obviously no animals were actually harmed- just like they aren’t actually cutting open real human beings on the show obviously they aren’t cutting up real pigs. Sheesh). Am I the only one who thought those disclaimers were stupid?
I digress, the residents and interns are tasked with keeping the pigs alive, but when some new trauma cases come in, everyone but Yang has to go and Yang is now tasked with keeping all the pigs alive along with her team of interns (whom she berates frequently). Long story short, despite some hiccups, all the pigs survive. So far the surgeons at Seattle Grace are going strong in today’s dramas. Oh, and of course, Izzie has her daily moral dilemma about how pigs are God’s creatures and blah blah blah. It was the token Izzie outburst. Am I the only one who can’t stand Izzie?
One of the smaller plotlines revolves around Callie (Dr. Torres) and Erica (Dr. Hahn) who have recently started dating. After their last sexual foray proved awkward, Callie was determined to do better- and clearly, she did this time around! Unfortunately, Erica gets a little too emotional afterwards for Callie’s test and Callie gets a little freaked out. Callie turns to Mark (Dr. Sloan / McSteamy) for help (and SEX- lots of it) while she tries to sort out if she is into men or women. Ultimately, Mark helps Callie realize she wants to be with Erica, and Callie confesses her indiscretions to Erica. At first glance, Erica appears to be OK with the fact that Callie hooked up with Mark that day- but we’ll see for sure next episode I would wager. What do you think- should Callie and Erica keep this up or is it just going to end badly?
Lastly, there are a few minor plotlines that are important to the greater Grey’s season but which get little coverage in this particular episode. Let’s run through them quick. Izzie (Dr. Stevens) and Alex (Dr. Karev) continue their high-school’esque relationship of being mutually stupid. Alex asks Izzie if they are hooking up with other people and Izzie goes into her usually emotional downward spiral until she realizes that was Alex’s barbarian way of saying he wants to be exclusive with her. They’re both really grating my nerves (a position usually reserved for Meredith).
In fact, Meredith is surprisingly not annoying this episode and there is little focus on her and Derek (Dr. Shepherd). The only real face time they get together is in the start where the introduce Meredith’s “Anatomy Jane” Doll and in the end where they both discover a box FULL of old diaries from Meredith’s psycho mother. Who else wants to see TONS of gossip from Meredith’s mom’s diary? I can’t wait for the gossip to come pouring out! Maybe a dark secret about the Chief (Richard)?
Finally, George (Dr. O’Malley) and Lexi (Intern Grey) make up over a bowl of box-made Macaroni and Cheese. Let me just say that I love Mac and Cheese. And seriously, George, you idiot, Lexi is a knock-out and you’re letting her slip through your fingers so man up and ask her out already. Ladies, tell me, what is so appealing about George? And do you think Lexi and George would be a good match?
Wow. I have to admit there is a lot more meat to cover in this Recap & Review than your average Family Guy episode of fart jokes and pop culture references. In general this was a pretty good episode but not a great episode. On the one hand, Meredith did not annoy me to pieces. On the other hand- Izzie did annoy me to pieces but then again she usually does. But, all in all, it was a fun episode and I am looking forward to more diaries and more of Major Hunt.
I’ll part with one important question: Am I the only one that can’t stand Izzie and her incessant whining?
Thanks for reading and hope to see you next week!
