Welcome to the new season! In tonight’s episode, Christine marries Barb to keep her from being deported to the Bahamas. In other words, the show decides to make Barb come from the Bahamas so they can make use of California allowing gay marriages. Also, Richard decides to ask New Christine to marry him. Multiple times.

Christine comes downstairs, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed at 8 AM. No, Hell, hasn’t frozen over, it’s just Ritchie’s first day of middle school. Enter Richard, announcing that he’s going to ask New Christine to marry him. This goes over about as well as it possibly could, and I don’t mean that sarcastically. Also, Barb and Pete are finally divorced! At the middle school, Ritchie and Christine walk into trash cans, Marly is pregnant to save her marriage, and Lindsey is pregnant because Marly is. But never mind despicable acts of peer pressure- Barb might be getting deported! This, of course, is bad news for Christine most of all. Meanwhile, Richard tells New Christine he’s “ready to marry” her, and is so romantic about it she could smack him.

Back at her home, Christine helps Barb by complaining about sandal selections online. And then, with some difficulty, realizes California legalizing gay marriage means she and Barb can get married- to each other! I love this show. Barb is wary of this brilliant idea, but this storyline has to happen, so before everyone, she and Christine get engaged. Aww. Everyone helps explain to Ritchie that Christine and Barb are getting a “friendship marriage” because California is letting people marry who they love. Matthew, who envisions weddings like my high school friends, agrees to be their wedding planner. And to perform the marriage, thanks to the powers of the internet. Also, Richard tries proposing again- this time with a scene from a frat movie. He’s so Mr. Romance.

Among other gay couples and a lack of political correctness, Christine and Barb receive their marriage license, bringing applause and a very awkward kiss, and then head off so Christine can have a photo shoot for this wonderfully fake occasion. Except that Pete agreed to re-marry Barb, so the not-real wedding isn’t really happening. Which Christine isn’t upset about, not at all. Nor is Matthew about his hard work going to waste. But the setting really is beautiful, so of course Barb returns (because Pete is an ass), and Richard finally pulls off his proposal (by being horrible at proposing). Happiness abound!

What Old Christine Taught Me This Week:
    1. Getting married means you’re winning. But if your opponent’s underwear falls around their ankles because of weight loss, that’s a tie.
    2. The Bahamas are not part of the United States. No, really, I’m serious.
    3. Dude, getting down on one knee doesn’t make it a proposal.
    4. Stealing ideas from movies or proposing just because someone else’s wedding fell through? Also not so hot.
    5. Sexual references, though? Totally work.
