I loved this episode. It was a bright point to this season. Buffy coming back from the dead, Tara dying, Willow going all scary, witchy on us and doing “dark magic”, the Doublemeat Palace, Xander and Anya breaking up, married Riley coming back. Let’s just say that this was not one of my favorite seasons. But I LOVED this episode. And who doesn’t love a musical. So here we go…..

For this special occasion, they even changed the intro to musical style. We begin the episode with a music montage as everyone goes on with their very normal, typical day. Buffy breaks out into song about her life and going through the everyday motions without feeling anything. I love when the demons break out into song with her.
The next morning at the magic shop, Buffy questions if anyone broke out into song the night before as everyone gets excited about the events that lead them into musical mode. Then they break into song about what they think is behind it. Giles thinks it a demon, Xander thinks that it is witches, as he backtracks when he gets the evil eye from Tara and Willow. Anya thinks it is bunnies as she breaks out into this whole song about why bunnies are so evil. Buffy sings that it doesn’t matter as long as they work together. The next question is if it is only them. That was confirmed as they see a man singing (producer, David Fury) that they got the mustard out.
Tara and Willow say they need to go back home and get a book. As this goes on, Dawn continues her klepto streak and steels a medallion off the counter. At the park, Tara breaks out into song about Willow and they end up back in their bedroom. Xander saw through their “going home to get a book” act. He begins talking about it as Buffy is not happy that this is going on in front of Dawn. She says she thinks it is romantic and what can go wrong. We see what can go wrong as a man in a suit cannot stop dancing and bursts into flames at the feet of Sweet, the demon behind it.
Anya and Xander wake up and break out into song. In the song “I’ll Never Tell”, they talk about everything that is wrong with each other and being nervous about getting married. I think that this is one of my favorite parts of this episode. I always liked Anya and Xander together and their song was very cute and playful. While it seemed fine at first, Anya and Xander are not too thrilled as they tell Giles that it has to stop. As they walk down the street, they pass a woman who is getting a ticket (executive producer, Marti Noxon) and random people dancing.
While patrolling, Buffy stops by Spike’s crypt to see if he knows anything. He is upset and sings to her about how he feels about her. “Let Me Rest in Peace” is about Spike wanting Buffy to leave him alone since she wants nothing more to do with him then just a friend. Another of my favorites from this episode. She is not thrilled with this and runs away.
Tara and Dawn talk about what is happening. Dawn tells Tara she is glad that her and Willow aren’t fighting anymore. Tara realizes that Willow put a spell on her and leaves. Dawn goes to her jewelry box, where she has many items she has stolen, and takes out the medallion from the magic shop and puts it on. AS she begins to sing about no one noticing her, a cartoony looking guy takes her. She wakes up at the Bronze, where she meets Sweet. He sings to Dawn about being summoned and that he is taking her back to his kingdom to be his queen. Dawn tells him that her sister is the slayer and he sends his guys to go tell her that he has Dawn.
Giles and Buffy are training. He sings about holding her back by being around. He wants to guide her, but he feels like he is standing in her way. Tara shows up at the magic shop and discovers that the spell Willow cast was to make her forget. Tara and Giles sing simultaneously about leaving. The two of them are the main focus for the singing in this episode, because, to be honest, they have the most talent. Sweet’s guy tells Buffy and the Scoobies what has happened to Dawn. I love the line “Dawn’s in trouble, it must be Tuesday.” Giles wants Buffy to go on her own to save Dawn. In “Walk Through the Fire”, the Scoobies sing about saving Dawn and all the problems they are having.
Buffy arrives tells Sweet that she will take Dawn’s place. In the song “Something to Sing About”, Buffy reveals to her friends that she is unhappy because she was ripped out of Heaven and why should she be happy because she is back in Hell. AS Buffy dances and begins to smoke, it is Spike that stops her and tells her that she should be happy to be alive. Sweet tells everyone it is time to go. It is revealed that Xander is the one who summoned him. “Does this mean I have to be your queen?”, Xander asks. Sweet admits defeat and leaves. The big finale of the episode is “Where Do We Go From Here.” As everyone sings, Spike leave, and is followed by Buffy. Spike and Buffy sing about their feelings for each other, and as they kiss, we see the words “The End.”
Well, that was number 2 on my list. What was your favorite musical number from this episode? Would it have made your top Buffy episodes list? If so, where at? Drum roll please, number 1 on my list is……………. “Hush”, season 4, episode 10. Please leave your two cents in the comment section or e-mail me at JennyD@thetwocentscorp.com.
Oooh. I'm rewatching Buffy right now, only on Season 3 right now. Once More With Feeling was one of my favorite episodes...with Walk Through The Fire being the favorite song in this ep. I can't tell you just yet what my fave episode is, or will be (but I'm sure it will involve Drusilla), but I can tell you which one isn't. Faith, Hope & Trick. Ugh, it was bad 90's all over the place with Faith's clothing and dancing...ick.
ReplyDeleteI just finished watching the whole series, and I still go back and forth between this and Tabula Rasa as my favorite. This is such an awesome episode though - after the first time I watched it I don't think it came out of my player for a month. And "Walk Through the Fire" is my favorite. I wish they'd work something out to bring the Buffy Sing-Alongs back!
