"Dawson's Creek" Summer DVD Review - "Baby"

Dawson's Creek
"Baby" (formerly "Look Who's Talking") - Season 1

High school gossip can be pretty destructive. In this episode, Pacey and Dawson's conversation about Tamara is inadvertently overheard by a stoner hiding in the school bathroom. The rumor about Pacey and Tamara's relationship is all over the school in what seems like minutes, and Tamara is brought before the school board. Even though she breaks up with Pacey and refuses to speak to him, Pacey throws himself to the wolves by telling the school board there is absolutely no truth to the allegations, and he made it all up. Tamara is obviously grateful, and blows off Pacey's brother Doug when he tries to badmouth his brother afterward.

Keep Wanting to Fight Pacey...

Pacey comes by Tamara's house after the proceedings, swearing to keep their relationship quiet from now. Tamara agrees that there will be nothing further to talk about because she's decided to leave Capeside. They couldn't stay together forever, she explains, and he had to have known that. Still, she's very upset with the choice she has to make because she cares about Pacey very much, she says, and they share a touching goodbye. I don't understand the writers' decision not to have one last kiss in this episode, but Tamara's reason is that she doesn't think she could handle it. In one last scene, Pacey walks along the dark beach outside her house and says goodbye as he sees her turn out a light through her window.

Meanwhile, Joey's sister Bessie has gone into labor, but their truck is stuck, their phone won't work, and Bodie is out of town. Besides that, Capeside has one ambulance and it's not coming anytime soon, so Joey is forced to ask Jen's grandmother, the Bible-thumping former nurse, to deliver the baby in Dawson's living room. After Bessie loses a lot of blood during delivery, Joey can't deal with how much it reminds her of when her mother was dying. Dawson convinces her that Bessie needs her now the same way her mom needed her during her cancer. Everyone helps out and they bring Bessie's healthy baby boy into the world.

Before the birth, Jen and Grams were clashing about religion and Jen's decision to be an atheist. Grams tries to use the delivery to prove to Jen that a higher power exists, but Jen says it has only helped her discover her faith in man.

Not a whole lot that's debatable here, and to tell the truth, I never thought Tamara's send-off did their storyline justice. Was the teacher-student relationship just too controversial to keep going? What do you think of Pacey's decision? Leave your Two Cents in the comments! Next week is the episode "Detention", and the introduction of bad girl Abby Morgan.
