Here is part 2 of the Witchy Willow episodes on my list. This week’s episode is Tabula Rasa. Tara Is upset with Willlow, so what does Willow do? Cast a spell. Wow, I see a trend. Willow gets upset, cast a spell that goes terribly wrong, and the whole Scooby gang is affected. Second verse same as the first. However, things are a little different from Something Blue.

Buffy is wandering around the cemetery. We have never seen that before huh? Spike comes up from behind her, again nothing new. But he wants to talk about them kissing. WHAT! Yep, at the end of the previous episode (one that is still to come on my list) Buffy and Spike kissed. And now he wants to talk about it. Buffy doesn’t. Kind of a reverse role, the guy wanting to talk about his feelings and the girl shunning him. Well, they get into a little trouble when they run into a shark headed demon who wants Spike to pay up the kittens he owes him. Yes, I said kittens. Buffy takes care of him and they realize Spike took off.

Willow, Tara, Xander and Anya are talking about brining Buffy back from the dead. Buffy revealed that she was happy in heaven. They all feel bad about this, but wanted her back. Willow says she can do a spell to make Buffy forget. Tara gets angry with her. She wants Willow to slow down with the spells. By the way, did anyone else notice how much nicer they are making Tara look? Thank goodness, the poor girl. They made her look so frumpy for a while, now they are making her look nice. Back to the story. Tara knew Willow cast a spell on her. She is mad that Willow is using magic to make things better instead of working it out. Tara tells Willow that she doesn’t think that this is going to work. Willow said she would go a month with no magic. Tara says go for a week and she will see. We flash to Buffy and Giles. Giles is telling her that he is leaving. He wants her to be able to do it herself and not rely on him so much. Buffy is angry and leaves.

Tara, Dawn and Willow are off to see Giles. Willow is not ready. She stays behind to do a spell to make Tara and Buffy forget. Unfortunately, things go wrong when the rest of the flowers used in the spell catch fire. Everyone falls asleep and when they wake up, no one knows who they are or where they are. Xander panics, Giles tries to reason and Buffy consoles Dawn. Giles figures out that he is British, and as Spike mocks him, he realizes that he too is British. In a round about way, they decide that they are father and son and since Anya was sitting with Giles and has an engagement ring on, they must be engaged. They all get out their wallet and at least find out their names. Except for Dawn, Buffy and Spike. Spike thinks he is called Randy because of the name on the suit he is wearing in disguise, Dawn has a necklace on with her name on it, and that just leaves Buffy. She names herself Joan. Dawn teases her about the name and they go back and forth and figure out they must be sisters. Willow and Xander figure out that they must be boyfriend and girlfriend because Willow is wearing his jacket and they were laying together. They decide to go to the hospital. But as they leave, vampires are waiting for them. They attack the group and Buffy slays one. Although they don’t know who they are, all of their personalities come through.

The plan is for Giles and Anya to stay at the shop to try to figure out a spell, Willow, Tara, Xander and Dawn to go through the sewers to try to get to the hospital and Buffy and Spike go out to fight the vampires. “Joan” figures out that “Randy” is really a vampire. She runs. He catches up to her and they figure out that he must be a vampire with a soul. “Joan” thinks it is lame. This episode is full of good humor.

As Giles and Anya try to figure out a spell, she makes a mess of the magic shop trying out different spells. They find a spell to make everything go away and make up. Xander, Willow, Tara and Dawn are hiding in the sewer from the vampire. Xander fights and kills the vampire. As he does, he steps on the crystal that Willow had to cast the spell. Everyone’s memory returns. Tara is very upset. Anya and Giles are freaked out by kissing. Buffy and Spike take care of the vampires. Buffy is hurt and Spike tries to help her. But she just leaves.

Oh, another positive about the episode, Michelle Branch performs “Goodbye to You”. Very appropriate as Tara packs and leaves and Giles is seen leaving on a plane. This is not a happy ending episode. Tara is upset, Willow is upset, Dawn is upset, Giles is upset and of course, Buffy is upset. And how does Buffy handle her hurt? She makes out with Spike. And so begins the very messed up relationship between Buffy and Spike.

Well, that was number 5 on my list. Would it have made your top Buffy episodes list? If so, where at? Next week I will be reviewing number 4 on my list, “Becoming Part 2”, season 2, episode 22 (Season Finale). This is a real heartbreaker in the Buffy/Angel Saga. Please leave your two cents in the comment section or e-mail me at JennyD@thetwocentscorp.com. I will see you next week!

  2. Tabula Rasa is probably my favorite episode - it's a really difficult toss-up between this and the musical. It's just so funny when they try to figure out their relationships to each other! Excellent choice.
