The first season of Veronica Mars is about as close to perfection as twenty-two episodes of television can get. Imagine Philip Marlowe as a seventeen-year-old girl, or a smarter Buffy Summers minus the super powers or Scooby gang, and you’ve got our titular heroine. Kristen Bell gives a truly magnificent performance as Veronica Mars, who is certainly no Nancy Drew: all in one year, her best friend was murdered, her lush of a mother skipped town, and she was drugged and raped at a party. She’s got a pep squad uniform in the back of her closet and isn’t afraid to use the tazer she keeps in her messenger bag. Liberally, I might add. She’s jaded, jumps to conclusions, and will sacrifice anything and anyone to find the truth. In short, Veronica is not perfect—she’s painfully human and somehow, between Calculus homework and solving the murder of her best friend Lilly Kane, she saves the world one missing dog or laptop at a time.

Kristen Bell gives a truly magnificent performance as Veronica Mars, who is certainly no Nancy Drew: all in one year, her best friend was murdered, her lush of a mother skipped town, and she was drugged and raped at a party. She’s got a pep squad uniform in the back of her closet and isn’t afraid to use the tazer she keeps in her messenger bag. Liberally, I might add. She’s jaded, jumps to conclusions, and will sacrifice anything and anyone to find the truth. In short, Veronica is not perfect—she’s painfully human and somehow, between Calculus homework and solving the murder of her best friend Lilly Kane, she saves the world one missing dog or laptop at a time.
But that isn’t the entirety of the show; the setting becomes its most influential character. Against the gorgeous backdrop of palm trees and the sparkling Pacific lies Neptune, California, sick with corruption, conspiracies, and class warfare between the Haves that want it all and the Have Nots that work for them. And within Neptune resides a nuanced ensemble cast, half of which Veronica suspects of murdering Lilly Kane: Teddy Dunn as Duncan Kane, Lilly’s brother and Veronica’s ex-boyfriend; Francis Capra as Eli “Weevil” Navarro, Lilly’s secret boy toy and the leader of the PCH biker gang; and Logan Echolls, Lilly’s on-and-off “Obligatory Psychotic Jackass” of a boyfriend, brilliantly played by Jason Dohring. And then there’s Veronica’s small-but-sure support system: her PI dad, played by Enrico Colantoni; and Percy Daggs III as Wallace Fennel, her newly-acquired friend and moral compass.
Why was Lilly Kane murdered? Where did Veronica’s mom go? Who raped Veronica? These are the questions that define her existence and work as the singular drive during Veronica’s junior year of high school. Sometimes her life truly sucks, but she has a fantastic camera, a dad who would walk through fire to save her (see what I did there?), and makes a pretty hefty chunk of money solving mysteries for her classmates. Veronica Mars is like a carton of shrimp lo mein: it gets better every time you go back for another taste. So join me in watching all of the surprising plot twists and dark humor, whether it’s your very first time or you already know all the witty, sharp dialogue by heart. And we’ll start where the story starts: the Pilot.
