"Man vs. Wild" Recap & Review - "Land of Ice"

As this season comes to a close, we’re still feeling the chill of Siberia. This week Bear Grylls is dropping in the Sayan Mountains. If I only knew that earlier I may have had my hot chocolate ready.

Bear drops out of another helicopter this week, but this time without a chute! He lands on the side of a snowy cliff and rolls down through the snow. It’s minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit and he thinks it may be the coldest environment he’s ever been in. His priority is to get down off of the mountain out of the cold winds. He also shows us how to determine what the weather will be like the following day. He finds some water in a running stream. He warns us to not drink freezing water too fast or risk putting your body into shock.

He reaches one of his first obstacles, a large river. He decides he’ll need to swim it. As he’s pointed out previously, it’s not a good idea to swim in freezing water with your clothes on, as the clothes will freeze on you and give you hypothermia. First he throws his rucksack with the dry clothes over to the other side. Then he strips down to his birthday suit and dives on in. A very uncomfortable moment because you feel cold & there’s a nude man on your television set. Nude plus cold equals not good. He makes it across and puts his clothes back on.

He starts up one of the mountainsides and runs into his second obstacle, a 100-foot sheer, snow covered cliff. He uses a pick that he brought with him and climbs up the cliff. He tells us a story of a German soldier who escaped imprisonment here after World War 2. He just made small goals for himself to survive. Bear has been teaching this mantra since this show started airing. He’s all about being positive. It will keep you alive.

Bear runs into a Tuvans village. The Tuvans are Turkic people who make up many parts of Russia near Mongolia. Bear hopes to learn some survival skills from them. First, he sits in one of their huts to warm up and have some lunch. On the lunch menu is blood sausage, which is made up from sheep’s intestines. They then go outside afterward to hunt a yak. They find and kill one, and Bear drinks it’s fresh blood. He then skins it and wears the skin to keep warm. He cuts the yak open even more and seeks out it’s liver to eat. He eats that raw. And just when you hoped that he’d stop here, he cuts out and eats the yak’s eyeball! He claims that the eye has more protein than a steak. Personally, I’d rather have the steak.

Later the Tuvans show Bear more hunting tips, including how to catch a sable. They set up some iron traps to catch one. While they wait to see if they catch their prey, they decide to build a shelter. They build it in the shape of a teepee. After it’s built, the Tuvans head back to their village while Bear stays in the shelter overnight. He builds a fire and heads in for the evening. It will be a terrible night for Bear, since the temperature drops to minus 30 degrees.

After 16 hours of darkness, Bear is able to head out the next morning. He is looking to get to his pickup site, which is up on one of the Sayan Mountains. He climbs up one of the cliffs and makes it to the top of the ridge. He builds a fire and make sure that it emits a lot of smoke for a smoke signal. The helicopter arrives and picks him up and takes him away. (That is, until next season).

I enjoyed Bear’s Siberian experience. This series has a good way to split up episodes by climates so you get an even taste of assorted hostile environments. And every time he ends up in a freezing climate it brings you right there. I had to put my socks on halfway through the episode out of sympathy! I’m already missing this show. But I know Bear will find himself in new challenges and be eating things we couldn’t imagine soon enough. What did you think of season 2? Where would you like to see Bear go next? Well, we have a whole off-season to think about it.
