"Law and Order SVU" Recap & Review - "Cold"

Law and Order: SVU
"Cold"

Original Air Date: May 13, 2008

This episode would be entirely forgettable if a few things that completely change the show didn’t happen. If you are like me and aren’t in the know about what’s going on behind the camera on SVU, this was a pretty shocking episode. It focuses around Detective Lake, who I feel like I barely know and apparently everyone in the precinct agrees. Lake is found shot twice and another officer is dead from the five shots fired from Lake’s gun. He won’t talk and thus begins the “Did he do it?” / “No, he couldn’t have done it” debate.

Most of the detectives and Casey are on side Justice, the side that wants to follow all the rules and make sure the investigation is done properly. Stabler is on the side of Stabler Justice, where he feels the quickest way to figuring out what happened is to ask questions, despite the 48 hour freeze that is in place because Lake invoked the magic you can’t question me yet law.
Fin tries to talk to Lake and help him but Lake doesn’t trust Fin and fires back with a “You don’t know me. You never tried to get to know me until now.” The best part is that he’s absolutely right. I have no idea who Lake really is or what he’s all about. One day he was there and Munch, after a quick promotion and demotion, was pushed to the background to assist every now and then with judging glances and conspiracy theories. So, who is Detective Chester Lake? Well, he is a man weighed down by the slow wheels of justice. For the past ten years, he’s been haunted by the case of a 13 year old girl who was raped and murdered and for the past ten years, he’s been trying to solve it. Of course, we didn’t know any of that because we don’t know Lake. The dead cop and another cop, Crane, raped the poor girl and her friend, Cecelia, who lived. Crane tries repeatedly to kill Lake, who proves to be Batman, dodging bullets and detectives. He’s Captain Let Me Save The Day Myself, Thanks.
The court case is a mess. The DNA evidence has been damaged over the years and M.E. Warner takes the “I’m not risking my job to lie for you, Casey” stance, which leads Casey to withhold the lab reports until after Warner has testified. There’s a big, fat mistrial and all hell breaks loose after that. Casey gets suspended, thrown before the bar and taken down all possible notches by Judith Light. Yeah, okay, I think I’m clear on who’s the boss now. Fin rips Stabler a new one when Stabler tries to apologize for pulling all the calls from Fin’s phone behind his back. Munch shows Stabler the request for transfer papers Fin’s filed and we see Lake being hauled off for killing the cop.
My reaction? Nothing happened, nothing happened, what time is it, wait—what’s going on? Who’s leaving? Why is this happening?! A quick news search tells me that Adam Beach (Lake) is leaving the show, which was expected from the previews but also that Diane Neal (Casey) is leaving us too. Now, I know a lot of people didn’t like her when she took over for Stephanie March but I loved them both. I know Diane’s got to go off and be free but I hate this. Whenever there’s a casting change on SVU, it makes me nervous. The cast is what makes SVU so amazing week after week and you can’t just throw anybody in there. I don’t see any indication that Ice-T is leaving other than the episode itself so let’s just hope Fin comes to his senses, forgives Stabler for being Stabler and we can all just get along like the big happy family we were. Who knew such a boring episode could pack such a punch at the end?

Stephanie March got a much better sendoff than Diane Neal, in my opinion. So, what did you think? Any ideas for someone you’d like to see as the next A.D.A.? Leave your TwoCents for who you’d cast in the comments below and let me know what you thought about this episode!

  2. I don't know if I can take another ADA. It took me awhile to get used to ADA Casey Novak. By the end of last season, I realized I liked her. This season I fell in love with the character and now she's off. Best wishes to Diane Neal. I hope she is successful in whatever she does.
I like it when the characters show vulnerability. The more flawed they are, the more I identify with them. So, the person that is picked has to look good wearing egg on the face. Because there will be those occasions, when they are hung out to dry by either the detectives or the supervisor. My picks for a new ADA would be Tracee Ellis Ross who played on Girlfriends. Karina Lombard, formerly of The L Word. Ali Larter of Heroes would really be good.

  3. I felt really sorry for Casey Novak, what a lame way to go... Detective Lake on the other hand, who was that again? Oh yes the stranger that was all of the sudden sitting in the bullpen taging along with Fin that is right. I won't miss him, I barely noticed he was there.

I wonder how long it will take us to get used to yet another ADA. I really liked Stephanie March as Alex Cabot. Casey Novak took a while to get used to. But she really grew on me and I hate to see her go.

It would be awesome though if we could get Alex Cabot back, there are some rumors going around that she will be back for a couple of episodes. But I guess I need to see that before I believe it.

Who I would like to see as a new ADA? Well depending on the fact that The L Word will be ending and a couple of my favorite actresses will be without a job and there are some power women who could be an ADA I would have to say Rachel Shelley, I would love to hear her 'object' in that sexy british accent. Or Jennifer Beals she is a power woman who could pull it off.

  4. I agree that Casey Novak deserved better, as Diane Neal did a great job portraying her. Adam Beach's character was not likable, but Casey was. Shame on SVU writers for taking the easy way out on this one. It is almost like the LOST finale writers were the ones who wrote this episode, as it was not a good story and was a cop out as far as the endings were concerned for these two characters. I wish Diane Neal the best going forward. SVU, you really blew it with this finale.
