"My Name is Earl" Recap & Review - "Killerball"

My Name Is Earl
“Killerball”

Original Air Date: April 24, 2008

Earl’s been in a coma for weeks, so, “like most month-old vegetables, the hospital wanted to throw him out.” And I, for one, really wanted him to come out of that coma already. Thankfully he did, but before that, Randy had to cross a few more items off Earl’s karma list to make it happen. In exchange for paintball money, Randy takes Earl out of the hospital in a shopping cart. On his way home, he runs into a hooker who sells him a hilariously pimped out wheelchair complete with a sound system, lights, and bubbles. (I now know what I want for Christmas.) Of course, Joy is jealous. At the crab shack, Joy and Darnell don’t think Randy is capable of caring for the still-comatose Earl, and they’re proven right when he fills Earl’s IV with chicken and beer. I’m no doctor, but I would not personally consider that safe.

Since Earl is out of the hospital, Randy decides that Earl can start crossing items off his own list. So, while Earl is imagining he’s been married to Billie for fifty years, Randy finds their old neighbor Derek to make up for the time they made him late for work. Years earlier, Earl and Randy had covered Derek’s car in dirt because he bothered them by working too early in the morning, and this resulted in Derek getting dumped and fired on his “own personal 9/11,” which just so happened to be on 9/11. Since Earl gets no better, Randy tracks down Bret and Tiffany Henson, two childhood neighbors they once stole wheelchairs from. Of course, Randy finds them in the wheelchair bar, where “it’s ladies night, and in an hour there’ll be wheel-to-wheel bitches.” My second-favorite line of the night.

Tiffany agrees to let Randy cross her off the list if he helps make her ex-boyfriend T.R. jealous by bringing Earl to a game of “Killerball” (wheelchair rugby along the lines of murderball) and pretending Earl is her new boyfriend. Joy and Darnell tag along for some reason. When Randy tells Tiffany to kiss Earl, Joy once again gets the best line of the night and says, “yes, please have her stick her tongue down a zombie’s throat, ‘cause this situation ain’t wrong enough as it is.” Since the team playing against T.R. is losing, Earl is recruited to play with Randy controlling the chair using a joystick. Earl’s team wins the game, but Earl only comes out of the coma because it turns out Randy accidentally helped Derek meet a girl. Earl tells everyone about the life he’s been imagining for the past few weeks, and Joy fears that the coma has somehow turned him gay since he keeps talking about Billie.

I liked this episode, but didn’t like that we were back in Earl’s subconscious. The sitcom storyline could have been done away with weeks ago, and I’m glad it seems to be over. I have enjoyed seeing Randy take control of Earl’s karmic mission, and I hope we get to see some more of that in the weeks to come. So what did you guys think? Leave your TwoCents about this episode in the comments!

  2. No mention of Randy's pretending to play Pac-Man while controlling Earl's wheelchair? Randy's "wocka wocka wocka" had me and the hubs rolling for at least 2 minutes!

Guess you have to be a video game geek. Or old. The hubs and I are both, apparently.

I'm with you, Laura, the coma plot line could have ended a couple weeks ago. Glad it's over.
