In honor of March Madness, we were graced with a Barney-centric episode involving brackets, scrapbooks, Barney’s Blog, and 64 scorned women. How Barney-riffic!

Something’s afoot in Barney’s world. After almost sealing the deal with different women in a hardware store, a pet store, and a museum, only to be slapped in the face by all three, Barney discovers that an ex-conquest is following him around, warning women of his player tendencies. Oh, how are we going to find out who it is?!? A college-hoops-type bracket, that’s how!

So we have 64 women that Barney has really done numbers on in the past year. He puts it to the gang to figure out who he treated the absolute worst. After several hours, pizzas, beers, and arguments later, the group has its Final Four: Meg, Anna, Kate, and Holly. Lily, the only witness to the woman warning others about Barney, takes him on a journey of redemption. He’ll apologize to all four and she’ll confirm whether or not it’s the girl she saw.

Meg is the girl he left in the apartment that wasn’t his in the episode “Dowisetrepla” from earlier this season. Lily sees that Meg is not The One and Barney doesn’t apologize.

Anna is the girl who started the website www.tedmosbyisajerk.com after Barney said he was an architect named Ted Mosby in the episode aptly named “Ted Mosby, Architect.” (By the way, visit the site… you won’t be disappointed.) Again, Lily sees that Anna is not The One and Barney doesn’t apologize.

Kate is the girl duped by the Evil Twin story and beats the crap out of Baney (whom she this is Larney). Once again, Lily sees that Kate is not The One and Barney doesn’t apologize.

Holly is the girl Barney left stranded in the woods. She’s OK with it, though, because that experience led her to her new fiancée. Too bad he finds out that the stint with Barney happened AFTER they were together. Say it with me, kids, Lily sees that Holly is not The One and Barney doesn’t apologize.

So they don’t know who the stalker is. Robin questions “Why chase someone who is following you?” Good pint. The group sets up a sting where Lily stays inconspicuous by the jukebox (yeah, right), Ted and Marshall chat nonchalantly at the booth (yeah, right), and Robin gets hit on by Barney (seriously right). After the hit, a woman approaches Robin and Barney is floored. He doesn’t remember her. He goes up to her and gives a heart-felt speech about how he didn’t think he was the type of person to forget anyone he has slept with (he keeps a scrapbook, for goodness sake) and he apologizes for whatever he did to hurt her. Impressed with the sincerity of the apology, Lily informs him that she is not The One, just a friend of Robins. So Barney gets some semblance of redemption but we don’t find out who the stalker is… However, according to Grown-Up-Ted, we will later!

Finally, the best part of a really great episode: The closer finds Barney writing in his journal a’la Doogie Howser! The same music, the same freakishly huge cursor, the same thoughtful smirk on everyone’s favorite teen doc. Sheer brilliance.
