American Idol
Top 9 Perform Dolly Parton Songs

Original Air Date: April 1, 2008

Janelle - TwoCents Staff Writer

Due to industrial action by the league of American vocal coaches, tonight’s episode will be replaced with a special celebrity edition of The Moment of Truth with Simon Cowell. We will see you next week.

APRIL FOOLS'! This is American Idol.

(Yes, Ryan really did say that. I promise, I did not make that joke up, I swear!)

Tonight we are promised nine great performances and Dolly Parton is our celebrity guest for the evening. I really like Dolly. I think she is a fun person. I don’t really know her, but I think she is fun. She is very down to earth and anybody that can laugh at herself like she does gets an A in my book.

APRIL FOOL’S!

We learn from Dolly that on the set of 9 to 5 she did not have a guitar and rubbed the front of her fingernails together to make that typewriter sound- she has fake nails and it really did make that typewriter sound! Cool!

Brooke is up 1st and sings Jolene.
Dolly- Thought Brooke was good and had heart.
Here is what the judges had to say (HIWTJHTS):
    Randy: She rushed it.
    Paula: You are Brooke White.
    Simon: No emotion.
Janelle: Paula? I think she knows her name. Brooke, you did rush it and I kinda like Dolly’s version better. Sorry.

David (not the favorite David expected to win it all, the other David).
Dolly thinks when David reaches for something, he catches it.
David sings a song about a little sparrow. I do not know this song at all AND I have to fast forward, quick! For you new comers to my AI review, if I fast forward through a song= BAD! The quicker I hit fast forward, the worse the song is.
    (HIWTJHTS):
Randy: Once again another hot one.
    Paula: Likes his hair.
Simon: You can make song about sparrows sound good.
Janelle: What? Hello?!?! This song sucked!

Ramiele is next and Dolly likes the fact that she is little and says that even though Ramiele is little it won’t stop her from doing anything.
Ramiele sings yet another song I have no idea what it is.

** Ok folks, Dolly has a ton of popular songs. Why are you guys picking these songs that nobody knows? Where is the 9 to 5? Where is the Straight Talk? Where is the Islands in the Stream?**

Back to the regular show already in progress….
Ramiele is still singing the same song I don’t know, I fast forwarded.
    (HIWTJHTS):
Randy: He wasn’t jumping up and down but he’s not mad at her.
    Paula: Proud of her.
    Simon: It was forgettable.
Janelle: Well I am mad as hell at her for singing such a forgettable unknowable song!

Dreadlock Jason is up next. Here we go again with another song I don’t know! Shess people, 9 to 5, ever heard of it??? I go to fast forward, but wait, I like this song. I really like this song. AND again for you new comers, if I don’t know a song AND still listen to it all the way through, well that my dear friends is the highest honor one can get while performing on AI.
He is singing a song about Traveling and I really like it. I like the message, I like his arrangement, I like it all!
    (HIWTJHTS):
Randy: Thought it was kinda cool.
Paula: One of his strongest performances.
Simon: He didn’t get it at all.
Janelle: LOVE IT! I thought it was wonderful.

Carly (aka MY FAVORITE!) is next. Dolly thought it was a good choice for her.
Carly sings “Here You Come Again.” Carly isn’t doing so great. I kinda like this song and the way she is singing it is very slow and not at all like I would like to hear it.
    (HIWTJHTS):
Randy: Better performances of the night.
Paula: Amazing talent and she looked good.
    Simon: It wasn’t great.
Janelle: I agree with Simon. It was waaaayyyy to slow!

David, everybody’s favorite David is next. Dolly says he has the voice to be a great, great singer.
What’daya know, another song I have no clue what it is. I like David. I know everybody likes David, but this song that he is singing is horrible! He almost sounds like Josh Groban and while I like Josh, I don’t like David sounding like Josh. I have to fast forward right away!
    (HIWTJHTS):
    Randy: David is back tonight!
    Paula: Amazing.
    Simon: On. The. Money.
Janelle: Where is the David I have grown to love? And Randy, where did David go? Did I miss something?

Kristy Lee is up next and sings “Coat of Many Colors.” Ahh, yes, a song I know! Yay! Dolly says that Kristy Lee has taken this song and made it her own. While Kristy Lee is singing, I am kinda not feeling it, ya know. She is singing and she is doing well, but I just don’t like it.
    HIWTJHTS):
    Randy: Definitely her wheelhouse.
    Paula: Beautiful Performance.
    Simon: Pleasant but forgettable.
Janelle: Yeah, umm, I think I would pack my bags Kristy Lee. If you make to next week, I’d be surprised.

Syesha is next and sings the classic, “I Will Always Love You.” BIG MISTAKE! You can’t take a song that everybody had done over and over and re-invent it on AI. I know I complained about not knowing any songs, but there are some songs that are just off limits and this is one of them. Syesha does exactly what I expected her to do…she tried to sound like Whitney and that is always a mistake.
    HIWTJHTS):
    Randy: It was alright.
    Paula: Thought she looked beautiful.
Simon: It was good but not fantastic.
Janelle: Paula, you know that you are judging a singing contest, not a beauty pageant right?

Up next is Michael. Dolly thinks he could make some good records and hopes to write some songs for him.
I don’t know this song, but I like! I really like his style with this song. It does not sound like a Dolly song at all. HIWTJHTS):
    Randy: Blazing hot performance.
    Paula: Dolly Parton is amazing.
Simon: WHAT!! MY DVR SAID THAT MY SHOW WAS OVER! Do I want to save or delete? ARE. YOU. KIDDING. ME?!?!
I HATE WHEN THIS HAPPENS!! UGH!
Janelle: *seething from my DVR not knowing that my show wasn’t really over* Michael, that was great!

Here are my thoughts from the night:
My money is on Kristy Lee going home.
Paula’s drug intake was high tonight.
Simon was pretty much on point.
Randy said, “Hot” “Alright” “Dawg” and “Listen Up” 587,956 times tonight.

Well, that’s all I have for you tonight. If you want to hear me rant and rave about even more topics near and dear to my heart, stop by my blog at www.junkfood4thesoul.com. See you next time!

  2. I agree with you on the the fact that these people sang songs i never heard of! It was real bad during the Beatles 2 weeks. The amount of hits these stars have, and the contestants sing unheard of songs, whats up with that?
I agree with you on the Jason song...loved it! Love him! Now I hear that they will be singing Mariah Carey...why? For one thing i cannot imagine a guy singing her songs, and she has such a high voice that even the girls are gonna struggle.
