Auditions Round 3 (San Diego)

Original Air Date: January 22, 2008

Tonight, American Idol brings us to San Diego. It looks like a nice vacation at the beach. Ryan Seacrest tells us that there are 12,000 hopefuls there to audition.

1st up is Tetiana and she sings, “Someone to Watch Over Me.” My little mini me gives her a 4.5, but she is putting my mini me to sleep – my daughters words, not mine. Simon says she is good, not great and not near as good as she thinks she is. However, she pleads with Simon to give her one more chance in Hollywood and he does.

Next up is our “heartwarming” moment for the night- they are giving it to us early tonight- We meet single dad, Perrie. The mom has passed away and from the story we are told it sounds like it was probably drug/gang/ OR something like that related. It is a touching story because Perrie tells us how he had to grow up fast to be a good dad to his son. He sings, Boys II Men “I’ll Make Love To You.” He does the song justice and is off to the next round.

Then we are treated to a 28 year old originally from Australia. He sings, “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long” by Otis Redding. He has a very bluesy voice and does well. He is onto the next round.

We are 3 for 3! BUT the California Gold Rush is O-V-E-R! Up next is all bad, very bad.

Mirah Carey wannabe is up next. She tells us that while she is listening to her iPod and singing along, people stop her on the street and ask her if her iPod is turned up loud to wear they can really hear Mirah Carey. When tells them that no, that is just her singing they just can’t believe it. Ryan has a little sit down time with her and asks her what she likes about watching AI. She says that she likes to laugh at all the funny people who can’t sing but think that they can sing. I think I know where this going, don’t you? Well, she gets in the judges room and sings, “Against All Odds” and does this weird, crazy thing with her voice where she goes up high and down low and does the Mirah Carey thing with her eyes closed and her hand going up and down. She is no Mirah Carey. She is really upset that she isn’t told by the judges that she does not sound Mirah Carey, but she keeps her dignity intact and doesn’t go cussing Simon or AI. Though she is upset when she realizes she will be on the reject reel.

Christopher and Monique are up next. She thinks that she is Whitney Houston, or at least tries to sing, “I Believe in Miracles.” But that wasn’t the song I thought it was! Christopher, too, thinks that he is Whitney Houston and sings, “I Believe the Children are the Future.” I believe these two need to just stay at home and watch AI from the safety of their couch. The judges agree with me. The judges question Christopher and ask if he thinks he sounded good and yep he sure does and keeps on singing and singing and almost has be escorted out. As Monique and Christopher are outside the judges’ room, they start bashing AI by singing a “put down” version of the alphabet.

Then it’s a love fest from the contestants. Who do the contestants love the most? Simon of course!

And Simon has no bigger fan than Samantha and her sister. Samantha is the last contestant of the day and as she is walking in the room, her sister throws a paper airplane with a note into the room to which Simon reads and the note asks Simon if the sister can watch, sit with, meet and judge or something like that. To make a long story short, Samantha sister does meet, sit with Simon and judges her sister. With four votes and a rockin’ version of Aretha Franklin “Till You Come Back to Me” Samantha moves on and I think her sister gets to go with her?

    End of Day 1

Fist up on day 2, Blake. This is Blake’s 11th time trying out. His poor mother has slept on sidewalks waiting with Blake the many times he has audition. As an audience we kinda want this to be Blake’s time to shine, but it wasn’t meant to be. Blake will probably be trying out for the 12th time.

Again, more bad AI auditions with some background music “Never Give Up on Your Dream” by Rod Stewart.

Alberto is next up and singing is the ultimate reveal of his soul- his words, not mine. Alberto likes to talk with his eyes closed and tells about how he gets lost in his imagination. He shows us his Barbie doll, long nails and his belly/butt dancer moves. He has a HUGE green fan that say’s Biggest American Idol Fan. Kinda funny, right? He will be singing a song he wrote himself titled, “Lift.” Before you ask, no Alberto cannot sing. However, Simon thinks the song is depressing and wants to end it on a happy note and gives Alberto another chance to finish the song, no luck Simon. The song is not happy at the beginning, middle or end.

Then there is a guy who sings, “Leave Me Alone Now.” Again, and again, and again.

David, a 16 year old whose vocal chord was paralyzed is up next. He sings John Mayer “Waiting on the World to Change.” The judges love him. He is onto the next round.

And for our last contest of the day we have Carly. Carly tried out in season 5 and made it to the Hollywood round with rave reviews from the judges. However, Carly’s visa did not come through and she was unable to go to Hollywood. Oh, did I mention Carly is originally from Ireland? She sings, “I’m Every Woman.” Simon doesn’t think that she is as good as she was 2 years ago, but she is off to Hollywood again. Lets up she has her Visa in order this time ‘round!

Tomorrow night is South Carolina, see you then!

  4. Anonymous- I hope you still get this! I know it's WAY after the fact...My work has had me over loaded this week and well...you don't care about my excuses now do you...:-) I had to replay that song about 50 times just trying to figure out what the heck it was saying and all I could get was something about "Wear Brand New Shoes" and "Sweet Sunshine." It almost sounded like Eric Clapton but then again it didn't...your guess is as good as mine. I am still going to a couple of different favorite lyric sites of mine to try to figure it out...it's become a mission of mine now :-)....If I find something I will be sure have it in the 1st paragraph of that recaps should I ever find it. Did you ever watch Married w/ Children? Al Bundy had s similar problem in one episode, kinda funny to think about.
