“The more I find out about this, the more I realize that it’s not a curse. It’s a calling. I’m doing something important, maybe even vital and I don’t think I should stop,” said Dan Vasser, in conversation with his wife Katie from the final moments of the season (series?) finale. Truer words were rarely ever spoken, my friends. I don’t think Journeyman should stop either. Visit savejourneyman.net to see how you can help.

“The more I find out about this, the more I realize that it’s not a curse. It’s a calling. I’m doing something important, maybe even vital and I don’t think I should stop,” said Dan Vasser, in conversation with his wife Katie from the final moments of the season (series?) finale. Dan wakes up with a gash on his forehead. He’s Quantum Leaped into the exercise area of a psychiatric hospital, but this time he’s only traveled a few months back to earlier in 2007. He meets Even Patterson (Don McManus, The Unit, Tilt) who claims to also be a time traveler.

Katie comes home from shopping with her sister to find Dan missing and blood on the bathroom floor. Dan is fine just a little bump on the head, but he’s nowhere to be found and Katie starts freaking out. Zack comes in and asks if his daddy fell down before he disappeared. Remember Zack already knows about his father’s “trips.” But Katie’s sister doesn’t know and she thinks Dan is on the drugs or gambling or just plain crazy (you remember, all that stuff that everyone else thought about Dan before they knew the truth).

Dan is still in the psyche hospital, Evan tries to explain how he ended up getting stuck there. Just as an experiment, you try telling everyone you’re a time traveler and see how long you remain un-medicated and straight-jacket-free. Evan also explains to Dan why he’s come to help him. It’s all about a woman – the love of Evan’s life.

Back in the present, Katie has called in the cavalry (of course, doesn’t she always) Jack. Jack and Katie are worried because Dan has been gone all day. Katie wonders if there is anyone anywhere that they could call to ask questions about what’s happening with Dan. You’d think that question would have been asked months ago, and yet here it is. Jack tells her about Dr. Langley the scientist guy who he found a photo of in the FBI agents files. Langley I also the guy who talked to Dan quite a bit about time traveling and then pretended not to know who he was when Dan showed up at his office last week. Jack’s been trying to contact him but he hasn’t been having much luck. Katie’s sister Annette starts suggesting that Katie and Zack move out. Jack and Katie talk a little about Dr. McCutie’s pregnancy.

In the not-too-distant past, Dan helps Evan escape from the hospital. He starts a fight with another patient. He’s thrown to the ground underneath a table and when the orderlies go under to grab him, he’s gone Back to the Future.

Dan shows up at home and explains the blood. He just slipped getting out of the shower and whacked his head on the sink. He’s fine. He tells Katie about helping Evan escape the hospital to find the love of his life. Google has bad news, however, Evan Patterson was killed months ago crossing the street in the park.

The next day, Dan feels a Leap coming on and Katie asks if she can watch. She’s never seen him go before. Dan is about to let her see the light, when sister Annette barges in and Dan runs out. We catch the blue flash in the reflection on the door. Annette has a house she wants Katie to buy in case she leaves Dan.

Dan is back in September 2007, Livia is with him this time. He fills her in about Evan and they spot the woman from Evan’s photo. She’s married to Paul Vogel some sort of political bigwig in the city. It’s not going to be easy to get Evan and the woman together. They’ve leaped back to before Evan was killed in the park, because they spot him tailing the woman. He’s got a bunch of flowers with him, which is nice for a stalker, usually they don’t have pretty flowers – mostly they just stick with the dirty rag soaked in Chloroform. Dan and Livia agree to help Evan talk to the woman.

Present day. Jack confronts Dr. Langley in a parking garage. He shows Langley the photo of him and his brother when he was a boy. Langley still pretend he doesn’t know Dan and Jack gives him the bad cop routine.

September. Livia distracts the husband while Evan takes the opportunity to talk to the woman – the love of his life. Lauren doesn’t really know him but Evan tries to remind her about how they met in college. He knows all sorts of details about her, but that just freaks Lauren out and she calls in the security detail. Dan grabs Evan and gets him out of there.

In the present Dan is talking to Katie as they get ready for bed. He’s convinced that Evan Patterson never really was a time traveler himself and that he was just a kook who was making up a story about the love of his life. They convinced him to stay out of the park and that’s the best they could do.

At the office the next day, Dan sees that Evan got shot four months earlier while stalking Lauren Vogel. The shooting was suspicious and Evan was found to be unarmed. The cop who shot him thought the jewelry box he was carrying was a weapon.

Jack sits in on one of Dr. Langley’s lectures and disrupts the class by standing up and talking about his brother the time traveler. Langley calls security to have him escorted out of the building.

Dan leaps in the elevator of the paper to the same elevator at the paper only months earlier. Livia has joined him in the elevator this time and she’s angry because she’s supposed to be getting married in two hours – fifty years ago that is.

Outside, Livia and Dan spot Evan heading to give a ring to Lauren Vogel. They think he’s just a crazy stalker, but he has proof that he really is a time traveler. He gives Dan a videotape and they sneak back into the paper to watch. On the tape, there’s a dance competition where husband and wife Evan and Lauren Patterson are doing a salsa dance to the song Perfidia. So her really was married to the woman in the past. Evan explains that his wife had died and every time he leaped into the past he would try to fix it. Nothing worked, until one day he traveled to the day they first met back in college and he changed things so they never met. He had saved her life, but she never knew him. Evan was okay with her just being alive for awhile, but eventually he realized that he couldn’t live without her and just wanted to try and remind her of how happy they had been together.

Dan and Livia warn Evan about how he’s going to be shot and killed as a stalker at a fund raising banquet later that evening. Evan doesn’t care, he has to try to talk to Lauren. At the banquet, he shows her the ring he’s been carrying but she doesn’t recognize it. Evan has run out of ideas, but Dan gets the band to play Perfidia and Evan asks Lauren to dance. Her bigwig hubby seems too busy to notice so she accept the offer and the two start dancing. When the dance concludes Evan falls to the floor unconscious. They call an ambulance, but he has died.

Livia explains that this was Evan’s day to die and that there was nothing they could do about it. Livia and Dan hug, they have a feeling they won’t be seeing each other for awhile some reason. They watch as Evan is loaded into the ambulance and across the street they see the six months ago Dan Vasser getting into a cab. It’s the cab he jumped into the first time he leaped back in the pilot episode and the whole thing has come full circle.

Sister Annette is still trying to talk Katie into leaving Dan even as she’s leaving. Dan finds Evan Patterson’s notebook and it’s full of all the details of his travels. On the way down in the elevator, Dan meets Dr. Langley. He’s decided to stop pretending he doesn’t know Dan. Langley starts coming clean about some of the details. Dan is part of a small group of travelers. Langley believes he is the last, but Dan knows there’s at least one more. Langley assures him that people are watching him and it could be dangerous for them to talk further.

Dan and Katie have a heart to heart and Dan is reminded of something he said when he first started traveling. He said he would always come home and Katie asked if that was still true. Dan assures her that it is true and that he will always come home, and Katie promised that she’s leave a light on for him.

Find out about the efforts to save this show at savejourneyman.net. I’m really getting tired of having to fight to keep the shows I love on the air. I think I’m going to have to stop loving quality, well-written, well-acted programs and start getting into shows with stupid people being yelled at by smarmy angry British people. Seems like that’s all anyone wants anymore.
