Hello kids! We’re back! Remember Ted has that butterfly tattoo on his back from the Mandy Moore episode? Ok then, we’re ready for this week. Ted is heading off to have the tattoo removed by Dr. Stella – who Ted is going on a date with. The gang is against this because you don’t ‘poop where you eat’. According to Barney the golden rule is “Love Thy Neighbor”. Got that so far? Ok. Now we are introduced to The Platinum Rule – “Never ever ever ever LOVE thy neighbor.”

Hello kids!

Ted dating his doctor reminds Robin of issues dating Curt at the station, Marshall and Lilly dealing with the Gerards the new neighbors down the hall and Barney dating Wendy the waitress. With this, Barney begins his story (as old as time) of how this will go – it’s always the same eight steps, as we will see as the Barney/Wendy story, the Marshall & Lilly/Gerards story and the Robin/Curt story play out.

    Step One – Attraction
Wendy the waitress dabs a spot off her chest in front of Barney.
The Gerards (Mrs. Gerard is played by Kristen Schaal who plays Mel on “Flight of the Conchords”) ask Marshall/Lilly if they like Brunch.
Robin is introduced to studly “Iron Man” the new sports guy and former hockey player.

    Step Two - Bargaining
Robin – “He used to play hockey and I’m a Canadian, I can’t help it.”
Marshall/Lilly – “We’re not going to date them; we’re just going to be friends with them.”
Barney – “What rule is there to say I can’t seduce the waitress at my favorite bar?”

    Step Three - Submission
Barney lends a hand to Wendy closing up the bar – they end up having sex.
Robin accepts hockey tickets with Curt to see the Rangers play – then end up making out.
Marshall/Lilly invite the Gerards over for dinner since the Gerards lost all their pots and pans in the move – they end up playing charades.

    Step Four - Perks
Robin shares cabs to work and gets to meet hockey players.
Marshall/Lilly just have to go across the hall to get a brunch date, dinner date or game of charades.
    Barney gets free nachos.

Step Five – The Tipping Point
Robin said she’d call “Iron Man” last night, but she didn’t – and he was hurt and called her on it.
Barney asks the waitress to send a glass of champagne to the hot blonde at the bar – oh wait, the waitress is his ‘girlfriend’.
Marshall/Lilly have plans to go out, but the Gerards show up to make a Mexican Fiesta and of course – charades.

Step Six – Purg – wait for it… wait for it…keep waiting for it for all eternity…atory
Robin keeps getting post-it love notes from “Iron Man”.
Marshall/Lilly can’t leave the apartment without running into the Gerards.
Barney can’t hit on women in his own bar.

    Step Seven - Confrontation
Robin tells Curt they are just pretending it works, she’s tired of the charade.
Marshall/Lilly tell the Gerards that they are tired of charades.
Barney just tells Wendy he doesn’t like her – that way.

    Step Eight - Fallout
Specific to the Platinum Rule because you HAVE to see this person/people again!
Robin can’t get “Iron Man” to do his sports report because he’s a puddle of crying mess.
Marshall/Lilly are too scared to leave their own apartment.
Barney fears all his drinks and food at the bar are now poisoned.

This episode did a great flashback technique of using flashbacks/flashforwards to introduce even earlier/later flashbacks. So well written and so well acted. Man, I’m going to be very upset when the new shows stop.
