Just as we were warned, two heroes died tonight. And after much speculation, they were likely not the heroes we thought would perish in the finale of Volume II. Here’s a quick recap:

    • Mohinder returns home to find a powerless Sylar in his apartment with Maya. Sylar demands some of Suresh's blood in order to bring his powers back.
    • Mama Petrelli tells Matt and Nathan about Adam’s plan to wipe the world out with the virus, and that they need to stop him by putting a bullet through Adam's head. As they leave for Primatech, she puts a thought out to Matt to kill Peter, too, if necessary.
    • When Peter and Adam arrive at Primatech, time stops. He turns to find Hiro there. Peter explains that he and Adam are trying to stop the virus, but Hiro attacks Adam to avenge his father’s death. Peter zaps Hiro, knocking him out.
    • Elle visits HRG in his cell to ask what her father did to her when she was a child. Bob shows up and threatens to “silence” Claire should she expose the Company.
    • After incapacitating Hiro, Peter and Adam fight their way toward the virus. They reach a locked vault and Peter goes to work opening it with his mind powers.
    • Without her powers, Niki and Micah track down Monica. Just as they arrive, thugs set fire to the house with Monica in it. Sans her Jessica-ness, Niki takes down a thug outside and rushes into the burning house.
    • West tries to stop Claire from coming forward. Claire gives him the files HRG had about him and turns away from West as he flies away. Then the HRG walks through the front door! HRG explains to Claire that it was her blood that saved him, but he then had to make a deal to keep the family safe: he’s going back to work for the Company.
    • Molly tries to find Alejandro for Maya, but can’t. Suspecting that Sylar had killed him, Maya accuses Sylar, who turns and shoots Maya in the chest. Suresh brings Maya back to life with Claire's blood. Elle shows up and throws some lightning at Sylar, rushes out with the box of Claire's blood.
    • Peter gets the vault open and Adam rushes in and grabs the vile. Hiro appears, he and Adam struggle, and Adam puts his sword to Hiro's throat. Nathan finally talks some sense into Peter and convinces him that Adam is up to no good. Hiro blinks himself and Adam out of the vault and vile falls towards the ground. Peter rushes into the vault and uses his powers to stop the vial from hitting the ground. Peter then holds the vial in his hands and nukes it, turning it to dust.
    • Niki rushes into the burning building and rescues Monica, but she gets trapped by a falling beam. Monica runs outside just before the building explodes.
    • Hiro tells Ando that he buried Adam alive in what appears to be his own father’s grave. We see Adam screaming in the coffin underground.
    • Nathan holds a press conference to expose the Company and reveal his ability to fly. Just as begins to speak, an assassin shoots him in the chest.
    • Volume III, "Pandora's Box," begins with Sylar injecting himself in an alleyway with Claire's blood. His wounds heal and he moves a spinach can with his powers.

As the credits roll on Volume II and the long wait until Volume III officially commences, we’re left pondering the death of two of the original heroes, Nathan and Niki. Both were on their way back into the story with missions of good; one powerless but rushing to save a life, the other in full possession of his powers and attempting to use them to bring down a seeming evil. However, since we’ve seen what Claire’s blood can do, it may be a little premature to mourn either character.
My guess? I’ll bet that Peter wakes up to the fact that his own blood can heal and opens a vein for his brother. Although, Mama Petrelli, who called in the strike, may thwart such a plan. She seemed quite ruthless tonight with her progeny, first offering up Peter and then killing Nathan with a phone call. Are we missing something? What is so important that she continues to offer up her sons to the alter of the Company? Hopefully the writers will spill a little more for us in Volume III.

Niki could be done. Even though Mohinder was on his way down to Nawlins to bring her powers back and save her from the virus, he no longer possesses any of Claire’s blood after wasting it on Maya and watching Sylar run away with the lot. Maybe Micah and Monica will team up for a little vigilante justice to avenge Niki’s death. Hopefully they’ll practice a little more before venturing out, though.
So, Sylar’s back. Not a huge surprise, but he could keep things interesting as we head into the next volume entitled, “Villains.” Although, I am a little disappointed that Adam Kensei is seemingly out of the picture. He was rather interesting as an arch villain. Easily caught and imprisoned, of course, but he really shook things up. We’ve seen the Sylar Show in season one, so I’m not sure where this is heading. Perhaps Adam can claw his way out a la Kill Bill, or maybe some unsuspecting mourner will hear his faint cry and dig him up. Definitely some room there for speculation.

What’s next for our heroes in the Spring? Not a huge cliff hanger here, other than waiting to see if Nathan makes it – which I hope he does. Who was that tall shape that killed Nathan? Was that HRG’s first assignment back with the Company? Who are they going to go after next? Mama Petrelli? She’s getting pretty scary. Maybe Bob Midas? The virus is apparently no longer a threat, unless Peter created the airborne dust version of it in the vault, so we assume that story arc is completed. Hopefully the writers and the studio heads will come to an agreement before Christmas so that we get a full return of Heroes in a few months.
