Samantha’s cooking…this cannot end well. She’s simmering a pot of red sauce and opening up a can of tomatoes. She sticks the can in the microwave, not remembering that micro + metal = showers of sparks and fire. For some reason, she’s doing all this in Todd’s apartment. He shows up and plays firefighter. Sam’s frustrated that she has to relearn all these things. She’s also relearned that she’s allergic to oregano since the next time we see Sam she’s talking like her tongue has taken over her mouth.

Sam, Dena and Andrea are having drinks and Andrea declares it “Andrea time”. I get the feeling most times are Andrea times. Dena jumps in and asks could they maybe cut “Andrea time” a little short tonight since they never seem to get to “Dena time”. Amen to that! More “Dena time”! Andrea says she went to a hypnotherapist to remember some guy named Peter’s phone number and Sam gets the bright idea that maybe she should see the hypnotherapist too.

Regina and Howard nix the idea of Sam seeing the doctor. Regina says that most people would pay to give up their past. Howard calls them charlatans claiming that one made him think he was a duck and quack the Oscar Mayer Weiner song. Sam says that they’re her memories and she wants them back.

In the hypnotherapist’s office, the doctor counts backwards from three and Sam will remember everything they’ve uncovered…guess what! Sam’s adopted! That’s good news! Also, Sam used to smoke, not as good news. Sam remembers that she had this heart necklace her birth parents gave her, but she doesn’t know where it is. Dena admits to being the one that got Sam smoking since they used to hide cigarettes in the grate and smoke when Sam’s mom was out.

Sam goes home to tell her parents that she knows she’s adopted. They laugh uproariously. They say she’s not adopted, but when Sam asks for proof they come up with a whole lot of reasons they don’t have any, one of those being some boy named Sean Miller stole all her photo albums.

Sam calls Dena to complain about her parents not copping to the adoption but then rudely hangs up on Dena when she spots cigarettes in the grate. She pulls them out, but the pack is empty. She finds the heart necklace instead. She confronts her sleeping parents and they still won’t admit Sam’s adopted. She says she doesn’t feel safe with them anymore because they won’t tell her the truth and she leaves.

She tries to crash at Andrea’s apartment, but Andrea is having none of that. Sam complains that best friends are there for each other and Andrea says that she’s too worried about being Sam’s best friend to be there for her right now. Ugh. I know Andrea is supposed to be a representation of the old Sam, but wow, are people really that shallow?

So Sam ends up at Todd’s place, but actually, it’s Sam’s place. Yeah, it seems that Todd’s been squatting there all this time, but Sam actually owns the apartment. She kicks him out because she can’t trust him to tell her the truth either. Frankly, I don’t blame her. That was really low, Todd, letting a woman with amnesia move all her stuff out of her own apartment.

Sam tries to make herself at home, including lighting a cigarette, and nearly burns the place down. She finds the place big and lonely. Aww.

The next day, Sam pulls up in front of her building and accosts Frank the doorman with all the info that she’s learned from the hypnotherapist. Things like her locket, her bald birth father, meeting President Roosevelt, her dog named Sandy…uh oh. Frank tells her that those aren’t her memories, they’re from “Annie”. Sam remembers that she once played the role of Annie.

Ok, Dena, you’re starting to scare me just a little. Dena gives Sam all the memorabilia that she has of Sam’s life. Some of it was even acquired from Sean Miller. So now they’re making Dena into some kind of stalker? I don’t know if I like that.

Sam dejectedly goes back to her apartment and her mom shows up to apologize. The reason Regina didn’t want Sam to go to the hypnotherapist was because she didn’t want Sam to remember the bad things about her as a mother. Sam apologizes for the things she said. Regina pats her back and says “That’s my girl”, which triggers this week’s flashback.

In the flashback, Sam and Andrea dance on a bar in the club. Andrea’s saying “That’s my girl!” Somebody slips a cocktail napkin with a phone number into Andrea’s mouth and Sam reads the number.

Back to now, Sam remembers Peter’s number. Sam decides to move back in with her parents. There’s a moment with Frank when he asks how the hypnotherapy is going. Sam says it was a bust. Frank disagrees because he saw Sam come down in the elevator. Baby steps, people. Sam looks surprised and proud of herself.
