There was no recap for last week, and that is my fault. Let’s put that behind us, shall we? This week was, of course, a Halloween treat in the Pushing Daisies world. It just seems so suiting that a show like this would fall on this holiday. So, onto the show!

We begin with a young Ned (I’m fairly certain that every episode will start that way) discovering that his father has moved on and started a new life with a new family. This is realized by Ned on Halloween, which has forced animosity for the day to course through his veins. In the present, Chuck has decked out The Pie Hole with spooky decorations, not realizing Ned’s inner anger. Olive, of course, feels the need to use this to her advantage in the constant battle that she is waging for Ned (unbeknownst to Chuck, mind you). Unfortunately, she does not get to relish in this triumph for long because the news that one of her former competitors in horse racing has mysteriously died. Who’d have thought Olive to be a horse jockey?

Anyway, she is quick to hire Emerson for his investigative services. The trio (if you don’t know by now, it’s Chuck, Ned, and Emerson) head over to put the magic touch on the unfortunate racer and discover a gruesome scene: the man, after being awoken is still barely audible due to the horse hoof imprint on his face. Luckily, Chuck had experience with a childhood full of headgear, so she is able to interpret.

The discovery is grim: John Joseph Jacobs killed him. Slight problem: Mr. Jacobs has been dead for seven years! Of course, spookiness soon ensues. The story of JJJ is simple: back in his time of…living, he was the leader of all horse racing. Unfortunately, due to the cutting of his saddle strap during a race, he was flung from the horse and, decidedly, trampled to death. After much more inquiry, and investigation, Olive and Chuck (an unlikely duo) discover that, in fact, JJJ is not dead; he has been living in his mother’s basement for the past seven years. So, after some discussion and a bit of a feud, we find out that JJJ was revived in the ambulance on the way to the hospital, but without the aid of his legs, he is forced to use part of his horse’s legs for himself. Soon, Chuck and Olive give him a ride home. Now, this could be the end, but seriously…did you really think that?

In a blaze of fire and equestrienne skill, JJJ’s mother bursts in to kill those who had tried to kill her son. Just in time, Ned and Emerson rush to the rescue of Olive and Chuck, also managing to fend off the crazed maternal woman. In the end, Olive agrees to keep Chuck’s secret from her aunts. All throughout the episode, Ned did a lot of sulking about his childhood and he spoke with Chuck’s aunts as well about his childhood. I didn’t say much about that simply because it bored me. All in all, this was a great Halloween episode.

Great job, Pushing Daisies, keep up the good work.
