I try to stay away from the internet behind-the-scenes gossip, but it’s so damn hard when it permeates everything. Two things about Prison Break stuck with me as the season started: Actress Sarah Wayne Callies (Sara Tancredi) was up in the air about returning to the show, due in part to a pregnancy that could not be explained in the context of her onscreen relationships. Then there was a quote from Dominic (Linc) Purcell, who stated bluntly that some fans would be “pissed off” by some of the things the show does this season.

I try to stay away from the internet behind-the-scenes gossip, but it’s so damn hard when it permeates everything. Two things about Prison Break stuck with me as the season started: Actress Sarah Wayne Callies (Sara Tancredi) was up in the air about returning to the show, due in part to a pregnancy that could not be explained in the context of her onscreen relationships. Then there was a quote from Dominic (Linc) Purcell, who stated bluntly that some fans would be “pissed off” by some of the things the show does this season.
So with all that, the surprise opening is diminished slightly, as Sara is killed off as a warning to Linc. He blames himself for her death, and the sorrow that has followed him and Michael through the escape. Michael tells Linc that they need to get the Sona grave digger on their side. He contacts Susan for the money to pay him off, at which point she asks for Whistler’s bird book, telling Linc, “Your handwriting hasn’t changed since the fourth grade.”
Without his medication, Mahone begins to have hallucinations of Haywire warning him against Michael, who asks Mahone to find a black felt tip pen. Meanwhile, Sona’s resident drug dealer tries to get Mahone to substitute heroin for his prescription.
Michael borrows a cross from the basketball fan in order to trip up the circuits. Since he is an engineer, Lechero figures Michael can fix the problem, so he sends him out into No Man’s Land with a digging crew that includes Whistler and Bellick. Bellick wastes no time telling Lechero that Michael planted something and is planning a break. When Lechero escorts him out to the dig, Michael shows him that he wrapped the cables in duct tape and packed dirt on top to hold things in place. Lechero is satisfied and turns hid wrath on Bellick, saying, “The only thing worse than a snitch is a snitch with bad information.” Bellick gets a cup of boiling coffee on his back.
Whistler’s bird book ends up back in his hands, with a note reading, “You’re running out of time.”
Bagwell kills off the drug dealer to rise up Lechero’s ladder. His first stop is Mahone, who then threatens Michael in his new cell.
The grave digger holds out for more money, at which point Susan shoots him dead, figuring that if he’s that greedy, he’ll get money from the cops for Linc and Michael. Sucre is hired as the new grave digger, and Michael tells Whistler one key component of the breakout plan: The chemical used to spray the bodies, under the right circumstances, can melt metal.
Tons of suspense in this episode, which bears all the best traits of the show: Intrigue, unclear motives, and random things that you just know are going to factor into the plot later on.
