In tonight’s episode, Mick agrees to help Beth’s boyfriend, DA Josh Lindsey, track down his missing key witness in an important trial. The missing suspect, a young woman, flees to a desert town after her safe house is hit by an assassin. Here’s what went down:
• Mick picks up the scent of the missing witness at the safe house and tracks her into the desert. Looking very suspect in a black coat, black hat, and dark sunglasses, he approaches her as she gets off a bus. Jittery from the previous night’s attack, the young girl accidentally shoots Mick in the arm – but he quickly heals and tells her she missed him.
• The assassin who failed to kill the girl at the safe house also tracks her into the desert. He takes out a police officer and assumes his uniform and patrol car. Someone from inside Josh’s team is feeding information to the assassin, who approaches Mick and the young girl under the guise of a police escort sent to bring them back to the city. But Mick can tell there’s something amiss with this cop, the two make off with his cruiser and flee from him.
• Speeding down the desert highway, Mick notices a black helicopter is pursuing them. They escape from the cruiser just as a missile hits it, blowing it to smithereens. Now they’re on foot.
• Staying off the road, Mick and the young girl set out across the desert. It’s mid-day, and the sun begins to bake and weaken the vampire as they walk on. He starts to crave blood, and a few times has to shake himself from the thirsty need to bite into the girl he’s trying to save.
• They eventually find an abandoned motel and break into a room. Mick’s burning up and desperate for blood, so he sends the girl for ice as he slips into the tub, filling it with water. Luckily, the ice machine outside is working perfectly, and the girl rushes inside, dumping the ice in Mick’s tub (note to the prop master: the ice cubes kind of looked like plastic sugar cubes).
• Meanwhile, back in town, Beth receives word from Josh that Mick and the girl had perished in the car inferno and completely breaks down sobbing (very emotionally wrenching display by Ms. Myles here, folks).
• The young girl finally gets a signal on Mick’s cell and contacts Beth, urging her to hurry to their motel and help Mick, who appears to be dying.
• Beth arrives at the motel and rushes into the bathroom to find Mick hallucinating in the tub. She realizes that the only way to save him is to offer him her own blood. He denies at first, but quickly changes his mind and vamps out. “At some point, you’re going to have to stop me,” he says before chomping into Beth’s wrist.
• After Beth’s donation, she steps out of the bathroom and his accosted by the assassin. She struggles with her assailant until suddenly the bathroom door splinters and Mick grabs the assassin through the door and kills him.
• Beth and Mick take the young girl back to the city where she helps to put away the arms dealer Josh is after.
• In the last scene, we see Beth at Mick’s door, leaning against it with Mick on the other side, seemingly able to feel Beth’s heart beating through the door.
In this fourth episode, Moonlight did a good job at altering course from the previous 3 episodes. Instead of hunting down a killer or foe, Mick is now in defense mode, protecting a young girl. I like that he then becomes incapacitated and needs the help of the young girl, and eventually Beth’s blood, to survive. This changed it up nicely. Mick’s flight through the hot desert gave us insight into how vampires (in this story) are affected by sunlight and also insight into his inner resolve and how difficult it can be for a neck biter to deny fresh blood walking beside him. We also move another few steps forward toward Beth and Mick’s impending love affair, but not too much that it’s obvious to see. This was definitely a good episode and a positive sign of things to come.
Once again, Mick proves his vampirism has sucked all intelligence out of his brain. How could he have thought fleeing into the desert was a good idea? And I absolutely love the fully powered abandoned motel 6. We'll leave the light on, indeed. You know, just for any wandering vamps, and such.
ReplyDeleteAt least he didn't get stabbed/staked in this episode. But I mean, c'mon, how the heck did he survive as a vamp for almost 60 years?! He would get killed each episode, were it not for his friends' help!!!
But God I love this show.
