The second episode of 30 Rock begins with Jack asking Liz to eat a huge $54.00 steak because he cannot eat that kind of food due to his current recovery from a heart attack that he is trying to keep a secret (see Season One). Enter the antagonist - Devon Banks (Will Arnett) returns to put a crinkle in Jack’s hopes of becoming Don’s replacement. How does he plan on doing that? Devon reveals to Jack that he is going to marry Don’s, less than appealing, daughter. How is this possible? Is this the same Devon that was gay in the first season and had a huge crush on Kenneth the page? Yes, same guy. He claims he became straight, but it is no doubt a lie when Kenneth walks by and Devon’s body language reflects his continued lust for the page. When Devon corners Kenneth in private, Kenneth reveals Jack’s secret heart attack. Devon uses this against Jack the rest of the episode in hopes of keeping Jack from telling Don that Devon is gay. While at dinner with Jack and Don, Devon puts his steak on Jack’s plate for him to eat and pours him a full glass wine whispering in his ear that he’s going to make his heart explode. This could be a problem for Jack. Both Devon and Jack are invited to Don’s estate for a party where they continue to jockey for Don’s attention. Jack puts Devon in an interesting position while they are playing a pick-up game of tackle football by telling one of the young hunky Yale wrestlers that Devon doesn’t believe that he a good wrestler. The Yale hunk proceeds to take Devon down and wrestle him in the grass, much to Devon’s liking. Ultimately, as Jack is feeling like he will lose this battler, Devon begins to choke on food and Jack doesn’t agree to save his life until Devon motions that he will not reveal Jack’s condition. Jack feels like he won that battle, but still feels like his health condition will affect any kind of rewarding future. Don confronts Jack and lets him know he heard about his condition, that he’s had two heart attacks himself and because of it has a greater appreciation for life outside of being a network mogul. Don reassures Jack the he has him on his list when the time is right to step down.

    In other character subplots…

Jenna is still dealing with the weight problem from her summer off. She thinks she needs cosmetic surgery, but Liz wants her to make a statement to the public that image isn’t everything. Jenna uses her current appearance to her advantage and coins a comedic phrase after messing up a skit during a live show – “Me want food.” This makes Jenna feel better about how she looks. Liz isn’t happy with what she thinks is Jenna’s selling out to the public for fame, but that is what makes Jenna happy, being noticed. She stands up to Liz, telling Liz she needs stop telling people how to live their life when hers isn’t exactly all together.

Tracy Jordan is still living in his dressing room, but Kenneth wants to help fix Tracy’s marriage. Kenneth attempts to hit on Mrs. Jordan in front of Tracy. Tracy thinks it would actually be a good idea for Kenneth to sleep with his wife, so his wife can even the score with Tracy for all the times he’s been unfaithful. Kenneth, being the obedient page he is, leaves to carry out the deed as instructed. After Tracy becomes disgusted with the thought of Kenneth pleasuring his wife he rushes to his home to stop them. When he arrives Kenneth is eating a grilled cheese sandwich. Mrs. Jordan is furious that Tracy would think sending a gay NBC page, who ends up vomiting in the house after trying to kiss her, to sleep with her would make things better. The Jordan’s make up and its happily ever after…for now.

PG’s Two Cents: This was another entertaining episode of 30 Rock. Amidst the humorous delivery there was a common thread with all three storylines in this episode – being honest. It wasn’t delivered in a cheesy manner either, it was just right. If you missed it, go to NBC.com and watch it when they post it for viewing. See you next week!
