FX debuted a new series last night. It's called The Riches and stars Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver. They are the husband and wife with three kids. Your classic anxiety filled teenage daugther, angst filled teenage son and the youngest child, the cross-dressing son. They are a family unit of a gypsy tribe in the South.
In the pilot (you can watch HERE on Yahoo) Driver's character is straight out of prison on patrol and the first show we get of her, he hair is in dreadlocks. Strange enough for Minnie Driver right? Wrong, then she opens her mouth and she's got a very thick SOUTHERN accent. Yup. Southern with a British twist. Then there is Izzard, who is very good in almost anything he does, who also has a real British accent and I couldn't tell if he was trying to sound American or what, I just couldn't tell. Anyway, Izzard decides he doesn't want to be this gypsy anymore, especially after he's informed his daughter was ordered to marry the lowest of IQ holders in the camp. So, he packs up the family and on their way, they are part of a traffic accident. A rich couple passes away in the accident and Izzard and the group assume their identity and move into their huge house. I'll be curious to see how this plays out in the upcoming episodes.
Overall I enjoyed the show. I could have done without the really fake sounding accents and the need for Driver to ALSO be fighting a drug habit (how many drama program cliches did they need in one show). But I like the premise, and Izzard is great so far (look for an Emmy nod, the academy loves showing FX some love). So I recommend you testing this show out.
Did you watch it? Will you?
