Maybe it’s the fact that Cold Case looked a lot like “Without A Trace” tonight, maybe it’s just that the case was really complicated, or maybe it’s the fact that I have a two-week-old son and was juggling recapping with Being A Brand-New Mommy, but I thought this episode was hard to follow. Intriguing, and a somewhat refreshing departure from the norm, but a bit hard to follow nonetheless. Another home run for Cold Case, which takes us back to the 1950s this week for the investigation of the murder of Pfc. Jimmy Tully, a Marine who disappeared while on liberty and was presumed AWOL. His family knew he wouldn’t have done this, and spent fifty fruitless years trying to clear Jimmy’s name. However, with the discovery of his remains in a barrel of toxic waste (“the kinda stuff that’ll eat your Florsheims for breakfast,” according to Scotty), the detectives begin a crusade to solve Jimmy’s murder, restore his deserved honor, and return his long-lost heirloom pocket watch. Semper Fi!

Back to the ‘70s this week, y’all, for a little roller skating! I had no idea how big roller skating was in the ‘70s, but it was apparently quite the rage (even Lilly and Jeffries got into it, as we’ll soon see). This episode, investigating the death of fifteen-year-old Missy Gallavan, was pretty lighthearted, a wee bit light on plot, actually, but a welcome change from the heavy, gut-wrenching, two-box-of-Kleenex episode that was last week’s outing. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for the heavy emotional stuff, but it’s nice to have a change of pace, and that’s exactly what this episode served up.

In addition to all this, we explore the moving and inspiring case of a woman who gave her life during the Civil Rights movement.

Now, this is the Cold Case I fell in love with. This well-paced, cleverly written episode (thanks, Christopher Silber!) had all the elements that make this show fabulous: an intriguing and often touching case with fascinating characters, some humor and personal moments with the detectives, a commentary on how much of a difference an inspiring teacher truly can make, and, of course, an appropriately sniffle-inducing ending montage. If this is what we have to look forward to in Season Six, I’m on board.
