When I first saw the season finale last year, I couldn’t help but think my mind had just been toyed with. So many things have lead us to this point and going back and watching now (which is something I suggest you all do before Friday) means that I’m furiously looking for clues about how the final season is going to play out. There are key moments that all viewers should remember heading into season four.

Laura, along with cylons Six and Eight are sharing the same dream: Together in an Opera House, all moving towards Hera. (The shape of things to come.) At one point, Laura and Eight wake up at the same moment, completely freaking out.
Tigh, Anders and Tory are all hearing some sort of music under the static on the radio. They hear it everywhere, and it even has Tigh at one point on the ground, listening to it and deciding the music is coming from inside the Battlestar itself. It’s later revealed when the Chief can hear it too, that only the four of them can, and it’s because they’re huge, human shaped robots.
People are flocking to Gaius while he’s in the brig, asking him for blessings. He assumes the Messiah complex pretty easily and is being defended by both Lee and a lawyer named Romo Lampkin. The tribunal of judges is set and Bill Adama is selected to sit as a judge through a lottery.
Throughout the episode, the fleet jumps to secure locations heading towards the Ionian Nebula while leaving a raptor behind for twelve hours to make sure they aren’t being followed. Everything is great until five basestars pop up. The raptor jumps away just in time and Adama has the fleet searched for tracking devices. Laura suggests talking to the Six they have in the brig. Six is interrogated by Tigh, they smack each other around a little, and she says that the cylons are tracking the fleet due to a radiation leak on the tyllium ship.
During the trial, Tigh’s credibility is completely cut in half when he takes the stand drunk, and he testifies to killing Ellen for being a collaborator. He also says that he’d say anything and do anything to ensure Gaius’ death. Laura takes the stand after Tigh, and in a turn of events, Lee is now doing the questioning. It’s awkward at best since you know, he’s not a lawyer, but he finally gets to the point: Laura is taking chamalla again because she has cancer. If you don’t think that pissed Laura and Bill off, then I don’t know what would. Laura holds a press conference stating that she doesn’t know what sort of long term treatment lies ahead. Tory flips out and calls the press ‘vultures’ and Laura berates her for it. She tells Tory she’s a mess and she better shape up or she’ll find another assistant. (We all know, of course, that Tory is about to find out something horrible about herself.) There’s also the shock that Tory and Anders are sleeping together, which Seelix very much disapproves of.
Dee ends up leaving Lee over the whole defending Baltar thing, saying the ‘system’ is broken and needs to be fixed. Lee eventually takes the stand and gives a whole speech about how even though Gaius made mistakes nothing was perfect on New Caprica once the cylons got there. He calls out the fleet, saying that everyone simply wants a scapegoat for what did go wrong. He manages to swing the not guilty vote in Gaius’ favor with his words. Bill and Laura argue over the fact that Bill voted not guilty, and he tries to remind her that not guilty isn’t the same as innocent. Gaius comes to realize that as well, as he doesn’t really have anywhere to go. A shadowy group of women offer to give him protection from a fleet that still wants to see someone die.
The fleet is jumping towards the Nebula when Laura looks about ready to pass out, the lights go out, the ships all stop working throughout the fleet and there’s mass chaos. The cylons appear in massive quantities, but FTL drives are down. Helo informs Adama that it’ll take twenty minutes to fix.
Anders, Tigh, Tory and Chief all start reciting lines from a song:
Chief: There’s gotta be some way out of here.
Tigh: Said the joker to the thief.
Anders: There’s too much confusion here.
Tory: I can’t get no relief.
That’s the cylon theme song; “All Along the Watchtower”.
All four of them converge in the gym and they realize that they’re cylons. There’s disbelief all around, but Tigh has the best line: “My name is Saul Tigh. I am an officer in the Colonial Fleet. Whatever else I am, whatever else it means, that’s the man I want to be. And if I die today, that’s the man I’ll be.” All four of them disperse to help in their usual positions through the fleet.
The last scene of the episode, and possibly the most powerful, has Lee back in a Viper. He’s soaring along and then suddenly, out of nowhere, Starbuck appears. She’s right next to Lee in her Viper as if nothing’s happened.
“Hi, Lee. Don’t freak out, it really is me. It’s gonna be okay. I’ve been to Earth. I know where it is. And I’m gonna take us there.”
The entire episode ends with us flashing through space until we end on a close up of Earth.
So, what are your thoughts? Who is the final cylon? And why ‘All Along the Watchtower’?
As for the final Cylon, I think that Dualla is a great guess, and she seems to be the favorite amongst the interwebs. From the interview with Katee Sackoff, she said that she was surprised by who the choice was, and made the comment that she thought it should be some super-obscure character from the first season (implying that it's not). Of course, the writers may have multiple names to put out there just to confuse any leaks. But Dee is still my guess.
ReplyDeleteAs for All Along the Watchtower, I haven't looked into the speculation on that, but isn't it possible that they happened to jump to a spot where a radio broadcast of the performance had finally reached? I assume the final episode we'll find outselves at present day Earth, like the old series. I know the song on the show was a cover, but it was heavily distorted and who knows how a Cylon brain would handle the signal anyway.
Just thinking out loud though, Friday is going to be great!
