It was an episode of shock, tears, happiness, hope, despair, love, hate, and fun. There were probably more emotions in this episode than any other Desperate Housewives episode to date. “Welcome to Kanagawa” premiered as the final episode before the Writer’s Strike took all our favorite shows out of the running, and thank goodness it did. If you recall, the episode before, “Something’s Coming” left us speechless after a tornado devastated the people of Wisteria Lane. We witnessed Mike enter rehab, Katherine finding out that her husband had an affair back in Chicago, the Hodges opening up their house to previously feuding neighbors, Edie helping out Gabby, and the death of Victor. We were also left with the idea that Tom Scavo and the five kids possibly didn’t survive. This episode opened with some of the strongest emotion I’ve ever felt before. As the paramedics pulled out each Scavo one by one, ending with Tom, tears poured down my face. They were tears of joy, mind you, but tears nonetheless. We find out that Ida Greenberg dies, and more tears stroll down my cheeks as Edie grabbed the hand of Karen to comfort her. And then the credits rolled…

It’s hard to believe that so much emotion could be bottled up before the credits of an episode, but Desperate Housewives writer, Marc Cherry, is an expert at doing this. After a giant apple crushes the cartoon man, we return to the episode; and during this time, all the residents of Wisteria Lane are collecting their possessions from around the street. It is now that we find out that the woman Adam Mayfair was accused of sleeping with was dead. We also witness the end of the Mayfair marriage. Gabby attends Victor’s wedding where she is asked to leave by his father after he informs her that she is not getting a single penny from her late husband. Gabby stands up, and walks out of the church at the beginning of the funeral. As she did that, it’s hard for me to describe what I felt about it, I was sad, angry, shocked. Again-too many emotions.
Bree and Orson need to move into Susan’s house for a small while until their roof is fixed, and it’s like heaven to Julie and Susan. Bree does laundry, cleans immaculately, and cooks wonderfully. The Hodges plan to move in for a short while because they have found someone to fix their roof; the only problem, he just recently had his heart broken. Bree and Orson’s solution? To fix him up with Andrew. That did not work out well, due to the fact that Andrew is much younger than the roofer, and Susan really wanted them to stay and pamper her more.
The money that Carlos had stashed away for him and Gabby to start over was lost in the tornado, and the only man who had access to it other than them, was dead. The Solis’ then agree that money isn’t everything and since they have each other, it won’t be a problem. But there is a slight problem. The accident in the tornado left Carlos blind, and he’s afraid that once Gabby finds out, she’ll leave him.
The final plot scenario is the death of Ida Greenberg. Her family was too cold to do with her ashes what she wanted, so it’s left up to Lynette and Karen. They break into a nearby baseball field where Karen recites a very moving poem (made me cry) and then they scatter her ashes. They are caught by the police, but the smile on Lynette’s face was so moving, you could just tell that she was finally satisfied with the way things are going. She’s had it very rough this season, so something like this was greatly needed.
I loved this episode and I cannot wait to see what happens on Sunday. How will Gabby react to the fact that Carlos is blind? Is rehab going to help Mike? Is the Scavo family going to be closer than ever? When will the Hodges be out of Susan’s house? These are all questions that I cannot wait to find the answers to in the upcoming and final 7 episodes of the season. So tune in on Sunday, April 13 on ABC (check your local listings) to find out! In the meantime, tell me what you think is going to happen! I cannot wait to review next week’s episode, and I hope you all enjoyed this one!
